Jon Reshard, the Next Jaco??

I don't see this guy blowing his own horn and there appears to be a backlash. Remember, at least as far as I know... "he" didn't say he was the next Jaco, someone else did.
How about just being supportive of the guy instead of acting like a roomful of...? I guess some are just critical of others' playing by nature. Until he shows me otherwise, I'll just say keep up the good work.

Vic has said himself that he didn't learn the song perfectly, he also said that he couldn't(and still can't) do some of those stretches, so he figured out the jaco thumb false thumb harmonics thing(which is really impressive) But it is still quite an achievement, and proves that vic is really creative and inventive(as, when he reached a part he couldn't do he figured a way around it)

ditto, anyone can play any tune as long as you practice the correct way. to play like wooten, you need to practice in a constructive way, but do you really think a contractor really wants to hear that during a gig? if i did that on a gig, i would probably get "the look" and get fired - there goes part of my rent for my house or half of a car payment.
i'm sure the kid can play, but is he playing by himself or with a group?
also, don't you think it's the right notes as opposed to how many?

Let's be supportive, and hope that his ability continues to grow, perhaps we can learn a lot from him. Remember that there are extremely talented bassists everywhere in this world, people that would blow your mind. And perhaps, it's just a matter of perspective. If all you listen to is metal, hearing the bassline to a jazz tune might blow you away. The kid is 17, it sounds like he has enough pressure to deal with.
I only hope it's not a Wynton Marsalis situation. Where he's appointed the next ambassador of the instrument, thus stifly his ability to grow musically, and create his own voice, at the most important time of his development.

I personally don't care what anyone else is doing. The original intent of the post to me seemed to be look at this guy, he's going to be the next... because he has great technique. These types of threads are so common on this site it gets a little annoying. It seems nobody is listening to music anymore but "watching" it. They get caught up in how they play something, be it slap tap or otherwise, that they forget to listen to the actual notes being played. My point of saying I can play Donna lee or have good technique is to say: so what. It wasn't my original idea to do it in the first place. That's what made it so cool for Jaco to do in the first place. It was the idea that was great, not really the song(though it was pretty good, too). It doesn't matter to me if Wooten could play Portrait of Tracy while still in the womb, he didn't write it and didn't have the original concept. One of the hardest things in the world to do is to Create something original. Re-createing is easy.
I think my negative comments are very supportive to reshard. He should learn way more from criticism than from someone telling him how great he is. But unfortunately, that often is not the case.

I remember reading Jaco's biography, when he used to brag to everyone he met how he was the greatest bass player in the world. Nobody took him seriously...until they heard him of course. And, for the record, technique will get you into the hall of fame. Victor's headed there for sure. And for guitar, check out Eddie Van Halen. I agree that being able to compose pieces that put out a unique voice is another part of the complete bassist. But world beating technique is a cool thing to behold...I like it as much as musicality and soul.

Yeah, Eddie and Vic are definatly hall of famers, but so is Kurt Cobain, so I dont think its all technique that gets you there. Heck I think Cobain was one of the worst guitarists on the planet and should never have been inducted. (If we're talking technical abilities)
