I've found that usually the players with mad talent are usually the most gracious and generous and encouraging as well. There are of course exceptions to every rule.

Didn't Mozart start composing by 14?
I stand corrected, makes my point even more.Originally posted by stephanie
Mozart was only 4 years old when he first tried his hand at composition. His first real compositions were at age 5: an Andante and Allegro for clavier.
Oh please. You yourself are bruised as from going on an on about your supposedly amazing playing. Give it up - if a 17 year old aspiring virtuoso can inspire such insecurity in so many bassists, there's something to be said for 'listening to the music'. Music isn't a competition and as such there are no rules, either - everything has it's place, right? 'Freak shows', 'acrobatics' ... the bass community needs to stop being so hypocritical by bashing kids over the head with the 'play-one-whole-note-per-measure-to-be-a-good-bassist' mentality whilst alternatively lauding the genius of Pastorius, Miller, Wooty, etc.Originally posted by Peter Parker
I have read nowhere in this thread where anyone suggests music is a competition. Nor did I see any chest-beating.
I agree, music is not a competition, but it seems to me to be more about freak shows and acrobatics. Everyone is so hung up about how something is getting played and by what bass that they've stopped listening to the music. That's what disgusts me.

Sometimes I roll up here and hear all the bashing of this and that, there is a lot of 'player hating' vibe that goes on. But then again, there are many ridiculous comparisons.
You know, over 50% of accomplished musicians always speak as if they are comparing other people's playing to the 'perfect player'. The other people usually are the ones I like better. They are easier to talk to, and I find their playing speaks more to me.
2 examples, Manring and Oteil. Humble monsters. The rest that have attitudes, bye!

Your spider-sense is way off.
I agree. Everybody likes to think that everyone's opinion is welcome here until someone says something that goes against the grain.Originally posted by narud
nah, its possible to give an opinion about something and not be threatened or feel insecure. i see the same thing when someone says they think 7/8/9 string basses are silly. seconds later, someone will post that they are just threatened by the instruments. there's no envy, they just probably genuinely think the harps and super thumbs are lame.

I think Peter Parker hasn't heard Victor play with the flecktones, tell me his playing in that band lacks soul, just try it....I dare you.![]()

Why get your feathers ruffled over people having a freindly discourse about a player?
I love music and I love talking about music. I also love to hear new people doing their thang. I don't "worry" about what other people are doing but I certainly don't close my ears to what others have to offer. My musical education has not atopped. I am always open to what others have to offer.
I even tried to sample your music John, but I couldn't get the songs to download from your page. I'll try again.
Your "Who Cares" just seems so condescending to those engaged in this discussion. Maybe it was jsut a bad day?
Would you care if the discussion was about you?
No offense met, so please take none.

I don't think the original post was boasting or chest beating. I think he was excited by something he had heard and wanted to share his find with all of you. Peep's made him out to be a fool because he thinks this kids got talent or compared him to Jaco. They couldn't wait to prove him wrong. Where's the love?

Checking out that Sean malone guy...he is good, I really dig this stuff.
He certainly has Jacos tone, and playing style....however, he looked so emotionless in that video, like, I don't know, I like seeing cats really diggin in and feelin it, maybe he was, and he just shows it in a different way.
Back to the woodshed for me

Well you know, that *was* a warmup. And he's definitely getting into it at some point. But I'm not sure how that matters - I've never seen him play bass live, I love the music - if I saw him play and he sat there "lifeless" would it diminish that? I don't think so.
Also, that's actually Gary Willis' technique he's using. As for the style - big Jaco influence for sure, but musically I think he's got a style all his own.

You mean the right hand technique?

Yep. I've thought about learning GW's technique, at least it's a technique you know? The only real RH one I've seen for electric bass. But it scares me a bit![]()

Since Sean have played a vast amount of genres he relies upon playing with 2 fingers since the speed he get is still incredibly and his accuracy is flawless.
(...)
When watching Sean play you can see how "easy" it looks since he plays with incredible technique that spares the hands allot of unnecessary work, this allows him to play amazing solos at incredible speed and with high accuracy.
