Jon Reshard, the Next Jaco??

well, it's "nice".

but after playing (including a good amount of practicing) 9 years it shouldn't be a problem to reach this level.

i'm not sure who said it, but i believe it was bill dickens who replied to someone saying "how did you get so good, i will never be able to play like that!":

"i am supposed to be this good, i have been playing for 30 years!"

A drummer friend of mine, is named Will Shepard.

For those that don't know, Pastorius, means shepard(or sheep herder) in latin.

Jaco, in many ways was a shepard, in how he lead a whole generation of bassists into the spotlight, and gave the bass a new voice...etc...etc...etc.

Will, has been playing drums for about a year, and he is by far the most amazing drummer I've ever known. His style is different than most other drummers, and he plays with a level of passion and intensity I have never seen in any musician. I believe that it is very likely Will shepard may one day become a sort of Jaco Pastorius for drummers.

an example of Will's prowess and dedication, he broke his right wrist(he's right handed) so he learned how to play the drums left handed :eek:

You've been playing for 6 months, and have 3 Foderas?!? :confused: :confused: :confused: (and have owned 2 F basses and a conklin)... so very :confused: . Well, good work, anyways.

I'm the next John Reshard, by the way. Not in chops, in mimicing ability. A sort of... bass-playing tofu, if you will.

jaco's donna lee was amazing, but id hope hed be able to do in one take considering he had that solo written out before hand.

the head of that tune is so common place among bassists its a novelty. i cant count how many times ive seen guys play the head and then not be able to walk through a chorus.

if your going to clone the style of one of the big name guys, at least pick someone like patitucci or gary willis who can at least play through changes rather than someone who by their own admission cant do all that well. but, if he were going for a willis thing hed probably have to go bald and start wearing a baseball cap.

There's a bass player I've played with a few times, who developed tendonitis on one wrist (I forget which) - and so he had change over from playing left handed to playing right handed (I think it was that way round)! :eek:

Imagine that? Imagine having to switch and play the other way round, with bass.

Yeah I agree but the main issue is that it would take John Reshard 20 years to be able to play like Willis so I guess he just doesn't want to wait that long when there is an easier way out.

Donna Lee is a hard song to play. That is just an objective fact. You look at all songs, and rate them on difficulty to play, Donna Lee is in the top 1% or whatever. In no possible ranking system would it not be in the top 50%. Hard is not the same as impossible. I can play Teen Town without exerting myself overly, but I still can see that it's a hard song. And Teen Town lies under the fingers nicely since it was written on bass. Donna Lee was written on sax, and the odd fingerings have put me off from ever really learning it.

Portrait of Tracy is impossible for an 8 year old though, come on. You have to do some crazy stretches in that one, and even Yao Ming couldn't have played that when he was 8.

I think if he can just be John Reshard and not worry about being any other type so called "Bass Hero he will be just find he really isnt much different from my son who is 19 who really like basketball and while he was growing up he tried to emulate every thing that Michael Jordan did from buying all the Jordan apparel to even trying to emulate his game but that didn't mean he was going to be the next Jordan it was just a person he admired and I would say this about John at this moment listening(now THERE'S something that is hard to get teenagers to do-listen)to Vic and Jaco inspire him and the older he gets hopefully he will understand that he will have to get his own voice for himself.It takes time.BTW I was no different than him when I would do all the Louis Johson,Stanley Clarke,Jaco,Larry Grahmn licks at this age.They were just influences as what Vic Wooten,and Jaco is to John-Good luck to him
