Jule Amps Monique part 4

Also, I consider Pre/Post to be on a 'need to know' basis. I don't volunteer that information. Ever. You'd be surprised at how many soundmen listen not with their eyes but with their gear prejudices. And it won't matter a lick anyway, because on stage, I'm tweaking my EQ from my bass, not my amp.

I was talking with Phil the other day about my new Bass Cub (which I love for DB) and told him I was thinking of adding the PB300 for bigger/louder venues. He said "I would be in heaven"

I'm also thinking I could just use the new Headway EDB-2 as the front end. I am trialing the EDB-2 and EDM-1 right now and posting thoughts/reactions on the DB side. It's a 'traveling trial' and when I'm done I'll be sending it on to Ric Vice next.

I feel my resistance waning - I bet I'll order the PB300 before the week is out.

Please pardon the incursion. I was just looking for more info on the PB300. Now I'll go back to the DB side where I belong.

Actually on Saturday at the small festival we played, the soundman had a Radial and I said "I'd prefer to use my DI on my Preamp...its a studio quality send". He acted suspicious but in less than 30 seconds of soundchecking he had a big smile and told me that it sounded amazing.

Monique causes soundmen to smile. My experience also. What an endearing quality!

I use a Radial BigShot PB1 Power Booster (15db boost) and I haven't been able to get Monique into heavy overdrive territory. I use a Sansamp BDDI if I need grit.

Maybe a 30db boost would do the trick, but I doubt it. YMMV....

So the shop I help out at is bringing Monique to the UK (and maybe beyond!).

We are in the build schedule for a:
Dove Cage
Rackmount
Tardis De-Monique
Minnie

The problem may be stopping the team here nabbing all of them :)

The Tardis already has my name on it and another one of the guys has put his current amp up for sale and has his eyes on the rackmount. . .

This will still allow us to demo them in the amp room of course but means we get some first-hand experience in rehearsing / gigging situations :)

If you ask soundmen what they prefer, pre or post, 100% of them will tell you to give them pre, even if post sounds better. Now I can understand them saying it to some inexperienced newb, but when you see a band coming up who knows what they're doing and they bring nice gear and they know how to get a sound with it, for gosh sakes, let loose of the reigns a little! That is why you say as little as possible, and even lie if you have to. "Oh sure, it's set on pre-EQ. Yep, just looked again...it's pre all right."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I have done this for years.

I don't recall the last time a sound guy/girl took my feed and said "Hey, this isn't pre-EQ like you said.... you gave me a post-EQ!):p

Also, their DI box being in my signal chain before the amp isn't guaranteeing that they're getting 'pre EQ' either. I have tone controls on my bass that I actually use. I use them extremely minimally on stage, but I'm certainly not sending 'flat' signal down that line. I have my passive treble roll off set to my sweetspot, then I have the low EQ (@40hz) set somewhere between flat and +30%. Also, I use my HPF in line right before my amp, taking everything below 30-35Hz out of my signal, which should be a big bonus for FOH.

Anyway. Most soundmen don't ask, have never asked. Why give them the opportunity to opt out before they've even heard what you're sending them? I refer to my Preamp as a 'studio quality DI' to soundmen because they're more likely to be happy with that than "DI from my head" which would be a lie, and most sound engineers are used to seeing a pile of crappyass DI amp sends.

Unless you have a sound guy like me who is a bass player! :)

We had an Jazz Afro Cuban band perform at Gracie Mansion in NYC last year (I handle sound for the mayors office). The bass player was killing. Ken Smith bass, and a micro aguilar rig. I basically let her do whatever she wanted with her tone because it was killing.

At the time I didn't know who she was. After the set I was talking with her and she introduced herself; her name was Amanda Ruzza. Not sure if you guys have heard of her, but if not, you should check her out. She was absolutely great.

We had the band going through our Midas Pro2 board and we recorded them. Now mind you, this is a city job, so we can't do the job a normal sound company would do, and don't have the microphone selection as well, although I was lucky to pull off getting the midas.

We were using a couple of beta 87's and ksm's to mic the drums(that's all we have). We never bought more mics because we don't have the staff to really to do a full out setup. Also, being that its a government job, they hire these bands but then don't want to hear them. Hysterical. they want them playing at whisper volume. They'll hire a 12 piece band and complain its too loud, that's why we usually don't mic anything.

Anyhow, we mic'd Amanda's band and took DI's where applicable and recorded it. And i had them crankin because they sounded that good. When I get back to work (I'm on vacation), I'll try to post some of the recordings.

Not quite 100%, Jimmy.

I recently played a gig, and the soundman asked, "You got a DI on that rig?"

I replied, "Yes."

"Great - can you send me a post-EQ signal?"

"Sure."

I'll admit that it was a very rare exchange, but it did happen. So, it's probably more like 99.6% of all sound men who would ask for a pre-EQ feed.

Hey Mark! I'm going to use the amp part of my TH500. I'm looking forward to it too. I might have to rent a big space to crank it up. All my upcoming gigs are weddings where I don't have time to "play". By the way, that Overton 110 has been killer for a few different applications. Lets chat soon.
