Jule Amps Monique part 4

In!

Looking forward to getting my DC. I have a question. I'll be doing some recording soon, some live, some in the studio using studiolive board which captures audio as it sees it from the input so you can do whatever you want in the mix later rather than being stuck with your live eq/fx settings. Does it make sense to use Monique as outboard POST production on a recording? Will you still get the benefit of it in the mix? Seems like you would even with the extra a-d/d-a conversions.

Currently, and for the sake of simplicity since I'm also running sound for an 8 piece band while I'm playing, (don't ask), my line6 wireless direct out goes into my channel on the board. My aux send, which has it's own eq is feeding my amp. This gives me the luxury of not having to set up anything beyond the PA which is all wired together in a road case. The sound to the house and my amp are separate and are saved as part of the digital preset for the next time we play the same venue, and what goes to 'tape' is pre-eq unadulterated signal from the input. Seems to me if I run the playback into Monique and back into a new channel I should have a much better tone for the recording? Does this seem reasonable, or am I missing something?

From reading your post it seems you want to use Monique for "re-amping" a recorded bass signal. This will improve your recorded bass signal benefiting from Monique's robust thickness and texture, but obviously as you indicated as well, this is not the most optimal way to do this. Many a/d d/a conversions happening here and your hitting the mic pre stage twice in the studio live board.

I have gigged with that studio live board and found it to be really digital and crunchy sounding, and the converters are just ok. But I understand this is what you have to work with. It is just a shame you have to work this way because you are losing a lot in your signal chain for recording, as opposed to going bass-Monique-DI out- into mixer. In fact, I might even try bass-Monique line out- into mixer in order to bypass the studio live mic pre which is definitely coloring your signal, and not in a good way.

You also wrote you are using an aux send into your amp. Is this a power amp or into the input of a bass pre? If its the latter, this is probably a level mismatch. I don't remember (it's been a while since I used the board) if the aux send is line level (+4) or (-10). It also may claim to be true balanced out as well (mackie does this with some cheap boards) and have all the level on the tip giving you 1.227 volts which can be too hot for your input and not optimal tone wise.

Honestly I would also need some more info on your setup to provide a better answer as well. Sometimes doing things in a non conventional manner still works, but just may not give you an optimal result.

I don't want this thread to get hijacked here, so you can PM me if you like. I have been an audio engineer for 25 years and would be glad to help if I can. And btw, I got started in the industry because I was forced to do what your doing; play bass and mix at the same time! Lol!

Thanks for the info Mike. It's always the BP who winds up mixing. The aux out goes to a crown xti2000 which feeds my speaker. Works ok. As long as this scenario will be some kind of improvement, that will be enough. I'm accumulating tracks now but I won't get my DC until Sept, so I'm trying to figure out how to get the benefit of having it on my current recordings, and it sounds like this will work to some degree.

No problem. Ahh, I see I missed that part. Yeah, I would definitely re-amp pre recorded tracks through Monique when you get your DC. I think you would benefit from it.

Check on the specs of the aux out of the mixer. You may not be driving that crown enough to get its full volume potential. The input sensitivity on the old crowns (micros and macros) were adjustable by a switch. Not sure about the XTI series. I moved away from crown and started using Crest, Lab Gruppen, LAcoustic power amps, so I'm not sure of the specs on the newer crowns. Good luck!

Why does the rackmounted Monique have a balanced level knob and the dove cage does not have that knob? Maybe that knob is the volume knob for the Demeter amp but the rackmount Monique pre only on Jule's site shows the knob. Hmm.

It's on the back of the Dove Cage.

Yes, that is the Balanced Output Level knob on the back of the Dove Cage. The same knob that is on the front for Rack Mount and Tardis Monique.

Truth is, if there were room to put it on the front for the Dove Cage and Bamboo Monique it would work well there. Just isn't enough room to use the large potentiometers that work so well.

Thanks Jule, I'm on the fence between all the new tube amps and also your fantastic products. I wonder how the Monique would sound with the new Demeter H-bass 1600d? I believe that amp has tubes in it also. What are your thoughts?

Close. I typically am at around 3-5:00 on the line out. I like to hit the front of end of the power amp fairly hard. I don't run it full tilt as I have a thing about not diming any knob. It's my CDO.

I have just started to push it harder, with a active bass and the pad pulled out I can't dime it but I can get a pretty good breakup tone that I didn't think Monique could capture. I believe that it can get more break up than my 400+. Not something I would use all the time, a new tone I thought was cool to see how others were utilizing.

The 1600d doesn't have tubes.

My mistake, it does have tubes.

You should be able to run a pair of 4 ohm cabinets - one cabinet per channel.

Interesting amp. It isn't a "tube" power amp though. It is class D with tube(s?) in the chain.

A rack Monique with one of those would move a lot of freakin' air...

My experience with Monique and the 1600D was only in the NAMM environment, so not the best of environments to really do testing. Impressive I can say for sure, but it needs more checking.
