Jule Amps Monique part 5

About .67

;)
Lol!

Thanks, MB. I have some 4 ohm TC cabs that I would use with this. 2.6 sounds like no prob; how different is 2?

I honestly don't think it's going to make that much of a difference. Also there are others here that have been running that amp at2ohms.

I believe it was stated here a player who lives in Texas is running is at 2 ohms successfully. I honestly don't think it's going to make that much of a difference.

Thanks, MB. I appreciate the input and have no reason to doubt you. I guess if it was completely okay, Jule wouldn't have put the "warning" he did on his website, hence my question. Jule? Others?
The main concern would be how hard you're pushing the amp with a load that low. If you're pushing it pretty hard, that would worry me. If you aren't pushing it hard, I wouldn't worry.
Kind of a nebulous description, sorry!
If you have a lot of efficient drivers, that would help get more dB's with fewer watts.

OK, so instead of being lazy, I poked around and here's what the manual ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) says about this (go figure, right?):

What happens if you have to run at 2 ohms (for example with a couple of 4 ohm cabinets)?
1. You have about 1200 watts of available power at 2 ohms.
2. For short durations, you will have no problems at 2 ohms. The difficulty is that
everything begins to heat up quickly at 2 ohms. There are already players doing three
and four hour performances with the M700 at 4 ohms. We know that is stable.
3. If we go to 2 ohms and turn everything up full, we are in uncharted waters. By that I
mean we can not guarantee the best performance.
My advice is to run at 4 ohms whenever you can. If you have to run at 2 ohms, know that
that is not the optimum for the M700.

This may be as specific as any answer will get (depends on how long, how hard pushed, and cab efficiency (okay, and ambient air temperature too)), but if anyone has real world 2 ohm experience, please chime in with details.

Thanks for all the input, DM

Well I can only speak from my experience. I have run it for 4 hour gigs at 2.6ohms and it never heated up at all. I would say that I pushed it moderately hard, definitely not extreme.

Thanks Mike (and others). Guess I'll find out soon enough!

I have a head that will do a 2 ohm load. I've tried it, not in a gigging situation, for a short period to see how it would perform. It ran fine. However, personally, I would never run any of my rigs on a gig at a 2 ohm load. I just don't feel good about doing it.

I guess when I went through electronics school, a lot of emphasis was placed on not over-stressing components.

I run my Monique into a Crest ProLite so I have the good fortune of two separate channels. The Crest will handle a 2 ohm load, however I'm not going to try it.

To me, those little electrons are moving too fast at 2 ohms. :)

I know this is a Jule Amps thread, but everyone here knows I'm a Jule Amps user and my love for it.

Tonight I left straight from work to do a gig so I am using my Read pre with Crest Prolite. I am running my Crest bridged and I'm driving a TC112v1 and Hathor 1203 equaling 2.6 ohms with no problem at all. It is a 4 hour outdoor gig and I have used this setup numerous times with absolutely no problem.

Granted I have to be careful because the crest bridged is extremely powerful so I run it at 11 o'clock. I also don't play at a very loud volume like some here may do, but the rig is pretty loud. (I have PA support). I'm also pumping keyboard bass through it.

Here is a pic of the rig tonight and forgive me jule that it is not Monique. You know I love her dearly!!

While I suspect the TC will handle a little more juice than the little Hathor, do you find them unbalanced or worry about stressing the 4 Ohm cab (TC?) running bridged? How well would one channel of the Prolite drive either cab?

That's what I was thinking, run the power amp in parallel mode with one cab off each chnl & use the level controls to balance the sound evenly.

Yes I definitely have to be careful, especially since I play some keys bass and careful with the Hathor. The TC112v1 can take more of a beating, especially in the low end than the Hathor. One way I combat this is by using an fdeck hpf on the keys to tame the sub lows. I always check the movement on the cone of the Hathor to make sure I'm not hitting it too hard. I've used it so many times that I pretty much know what I can get away with. Again I do not play extremely loud. I'm doing club, wedding, and corporate gigs always with PA support.

I would do this but unfortunately I bought the crest 2.0, not the 3.0. I wish I had bought the 3.0 but I have worked around the problem by running the 2.0 bridged. I don't like running the 2.0 parallel because the limiter kicks in on the amp and changes the tone (compresses it). The 2.0 if I remember correctly only puts out 300w or so at 8 ohms, and the HATHOR 1203 can handle 500w. Hence why I choose to run it in bridged mode.

Now Duke has warned me to be very careful because he checked the specs of the crest in bridged mode, and if I was careless I would blow the speakers. I have experimented with this setup for a while now so I know what I can do. Also after playing for 35 years now, I know how to control my technique and playing pretty well too and not over exert the cones.

So yes using the crest bridged with those cabs is a risk, but only if you are careless, and perhaps if you have a heavy attack and your tone is bass heavy.

Sorry to knock this thread off topic.

Not at all. You hit upon several points of potential interest to Monique users, even though, in this case, you were playing another pre. I've seen multiple mentions of the Prolite 2.0 and the Audiokinesis cabs being used with Monique, and at least one other mention of a TC/Hathor pairing being used. Several useful nuggets in your post for users of any pre. Anyway, I think most folks in this thread are fairly open minded.

Does your Monique have an internal amp, or do you run it with a separate poweramp? And, to verify, is the Hathor the 8 Ohm cab in your pairing?

I was initially using my Dove Cage with the Demeter Minnie. But when I decided to try the cab pairing TC112v1 (4ohms), Hathor 1203 (8ohms), I couldn't do so with the Minnie so I used it with the Crest Prolite. Sounded and felt great!

Eventually I got the M700 power amp and used that instead of the crest with the same cab pairing and Dove Cage which felt and sounded even better. I was very pleased that I was able to use the M700 driving 2.6 ohms and the amp never got warm.

Again I do not play extremely loud due to PA support so perhaps that is why this setup works for me. I will soon have a Monique 700 tardis and I hope to achieve the same results with this cab setup. I understand it's s different configuration with the pre and power amp in the same chassis, so perhaps it may get warm at 2.6 ohms. Well I guess I will soon find out. Definitely going to baby it at first and take it slow to see how much I can push it. :)

My current gig rig is configured this way.

fdeck HPF 3 > Monique > Crest ProLITE 2.0 (In parallel) > 2 x AudioKinesis Hathor 1203.

Even though we have PA support for all of our gigs (except small party gigs) I still run both cabs. For outdoor gigs, it gets pretty loud. But nothing is stressing. I will say that we never have volume battles in either band I am playing in.

I'm sure with the level of expertise of the users in this thread, one could run at a lower impedance and be fine, especially when not pushing the gear hard.

In my situation, with the equipment and band setting, running the above setup works with plenty of juice to spare.

@funk7856 was kind enough to let me play through his demonique a couple of years ago and I came away unimpressed but after recording and playing a couple of gigs with M700 previously belonging to @nomatic I'm converted. Played a wedding last night with DI out to the PA. Very easy to get a good tone out of the PA. No EQing needed, it was just there. Clear, defined and authoritative but simultaneously smooth and syrupy. How do it do that?

The studio slip bag is nice. I emailed Susan to let her know the measurements are a little on the long side. Anyone thinking about ordering might want to reduce the "height" measurement. They have 17 1/2 listed but it seems like it's a little longer than that. Not really a problem but it's not a snug fit. I did the double padding option and would definitely recommend that. I didn't do the cushioned grip handle because the amp isn't that heavy and it's fine. IMO this bag wouldn't handle touring but is suitable for car to venue use. Then again I've never toured so what do I know? I dig the nice big pocket.
