Jule Amps Monique part 5

Invalid Link Removed

I was tinkering around under the hood the other day, pulled out a couple tubes and returned the original Shuguangs to the V1 & V2 spots... I need to order up a couple sets of extra new-issue 6SL7's to have on hand. I'm getting out of the vintage and NOS market...I've had a NOS JAN RCA Blackplate, a brown base Tung Sol, and a Sylvania all go south. All from a solid reputable dealer.

Who's making decent new issue 6SL7's these days that I can count on? I don't go for gold plated pins or audiophile rebrands.

I would love to know as well if only to try different flavors within the Monique.

Ok, so I'm about to pull the trigger on a Monique preamp.

I play mostly Dingwall basses and usually run them active (Glockenglang preamps on board).

Couple of questions: 1) can I run my bass active without any problems into the Monique? and 2) any difference in sound/features between the "dove cage" and the rack mount?

Also, I'm planning using a Prolite 2.0 DSP as my power amp. Anyone use this amp with a Monique?

Thanks!

1. You shouldn't have any issues. I ran an 18v Bongo into Monique over the weekend and it was glorious! The Bongo is pretty hot.

I run active basses exclusively and haven't had any issues other than my 78' Stingray (which has a high gain preamp and ceramic pickup) it's uber hot and has given me issues with a few amps. It sounded good into Mo, but it was clipping the front end more than I wanted.

2. No difference in the dove cage vs the rack.

3. I run a ProLite 3.0 with mine and it's great. Tons of power on tap.

I'm a Dingwall playa and you got nothin to worry about, as Dave says! Dingwall => Monique = Awesomeness!

I think the only sound difference you may get will be based on the amplification you use, and speakers. I have heard from some Monique players that have been able to compare the two that the Monique with the Demeter sounds subtly different than Monique with the M700 by Jule. It may be more of an attack thing than a tone thing though. I can't speak to that, as I have a Monique Tardis with the M700 amp built in.

I am so pleased with my Monique that I have sold my other amps. Killer tone.

Speaking of which, can anybody talk about any differences between the Minnie and a ProLite?

I love the Monique + ProLite and I've been thinking about making a smaller rig than a 6 space rack for smaller gigs and rehearsals. The Dovecage and a Minnie would be perfect.

My thoughts would be to look at Jule's stand alone 700 over the Minnie. The footprint may be a little bigger, but I think the guys here who have had both have noted a tonal and performance difference...and we know Jule's build quality is of the highest level.

That's kind of where I'm leaning, I just like the form factor of the Minnie for what I'd want to use this rig for. I've thought about going with a Monique M700 too, but I love the look of the dove cage. Decisions...decisions.

The cage just isn't practical for me. I actually waited for Jule to get the rack-mount up and running before buying. But either way, it's the same unit inside. I would also say that Jule's customer service is worth it for his power amp, beyond the fact that the unit is a build designed to compliment the best of what the Monique is. He really is in the top level when it comes to caring for his customers.

I agree regarding the practicality of the Bird cage. I am very happy with my Tardis form factor. But, I must say that Bird Cage is just so damn cool!

Oh, I totally agree. And if I had it in a studio or a home practice setting predominantly, I'd consider it. But for most of the stages we play it's not conducive to comportment and/or our stage setup.

I agree! I absolutely love my rack mount pre.

Now I'm weighing the cost differences. The Monique M700 new is about the cost of a used dove cage + M700 amp. Hmm
You might check with Jule about adding the M700 power module to your rack pre. Maybe not as sexy as the DC + M700, but functionally, almost exactly the same (you'd be minus the power amp level control).

That's an idea, but I'm more looking to add something as a smaller rig than my usual rack. I suppose I could cut down to a 4U rack if I did that though...hmmm.
