Jule Amps Monique part 5

Maybe someone would trade a table top Monique 700 head for your Rack Monique?
If not, maybe just use a 2U rack?

I'm not interested in trading one for another. My 6U rack is fine for the majority of my gigs. The smallest rack I could go with if I had an integrated unit would be 4U. I use wireless and I have a power conditioner (for neat cables and easy setup).

This whole idea is really just for home practice, band rehearsals, and smaller/low key gigs where I have less space to work with. I'm really just debating between a dovecage/M700 or Minnie setup, an integrated rack, or a tardis.

I love the look of the dovecage but I'm not sure I want to go through the extra trouble to have one. By trouble I mean carrying two pieces of equipment and having to setup/teardown that stuff every time. The whole practicality thing I guess. But then again it is tiny, looks cool and unique, and all that stuff...

I'm a fan of racks (what guy isn't ;)) so going with an integrated rack would be in my wheel house...but a rack isn't exactly small. A 2U would be fine for this purpose so it'd be as small as it gets. There is at least one place that we play that I'd have trouble with it though, but I could always use my combo for that place (and secretly hope that we never play there again...like I do every time we play there). A tardis would work just fine as well but I'd probably rather carry the rack.

The biggest thing I'm debating still is the M700 vs. Minnie. Everything I have read makes me want the M700. But the Minnie's size is more of what I'm looking for. To put it another way, if I decide on the Minnie I'm getting the dovecage. If I decide on the M700 I'd still be up in the air as to the form factor.
Right now there is a great price on a used Minnie in the classifieds, hence all the toiling.

1st world problems.

I'm ecstatic to be joining the Jule Amp family! I recently received my Monique Bamboo (my first tube pre)... Heard someone play thru a Dovecage/Crown amp once and was convinced to order my own! (Difficult deciding which version to buy though...)

I'm currently using it two different ways:

(1) M>Crown XLS2502>Berg CN210/112 (+ additional 112 occasionally)...
image.jpg

(2) M>Warwick LWA1000 (effects return)>Berg NV610T...particularly sweet with this cab!!!

I must also say...Jule was incredibly nice to work with during the build process! He kept me updated (without my prompting) and graciously answered all my tube pre newbie questions along the way! Thanks again, Jule!

Question for you guys (I really trust this Monique crew):

My rig in question: Monique Rack Pre & a Crest ProLITE 2.0 housed in a full-sized SKB 6U rack case. This rig is used with two AudioKinesis Hathor 1203 cabs.

I am thinking about splitting this up into two separate cases. This would be two lighter units, a smaller footprint on top of the 1203 stack and more modularity (I could place Monique on top of the 1203 stack and place the Crest to the side or back of the cabs).

I am seriously thinking about 2 Gator “shallow” cases:
(Gator GR-3S - 3 Rack Spaces | Sweetwater.com).
  • Interior Front Rail to Rear Rail Distance: 12"
  • Interior Front Rail To Rear Lid: 14.25"
  • Interior Lid Depth: 2.25"
  • Exterior: 8.25" x 22" x 16.75"
  • Weight: 10 lbs
The reason for the 3U is to have a little extra ventilation room, as well as to have room in case I want to run my fdeck HPF and/or tuner on top of Monique plus a power strip like I currently do.

Both Monique and the Prolite are 10” deep. This would give me 2” extra in the rear (4/12” with the rear lid on).
The SKB “shallow” cases are not deep enough (10.5”). Plus SKB no longer builds the 3U ATA full-size cases (similar to the Gator in the link above).
I could go with 2U cases, but I’m a little weary of not having enough ventilation space and room for tuner - hpf - power strip.

Questions:

Am I overlooking anything?

Are the Gator cases solid units? (The new ones have rubber feet and locks on the lids instead of the case portion)

Any of you folks using or have used the Gator cases?

I know I could get Jule to put the 700 amp in my Monique rack pre and solve some of this. But I am satisfied with the Monique/Crest combination. In fact, this is the first time in a long time that I am totally happy. Thanks to Jule and Duke!
Plus, I want to wait a while before I even “think” about upgrading. No telling what Jule might come up with in a couple of years!

So, give me you opinion. Let me know what you think.

I recently purchased a Prolite 2.0 DSP and have a Monique rack pre coming soon. I ordered a 4U Roadrunner soft case. Very light and small. Why are you using a 6U case?

I am currently using it since I already had it when I put together my rig. It was just sitting around not being used. A 6U is not that far-fetched when you thing about it. 4U being used for the Prolite and Monique then on top of the Monique, I have a switcher, tuner and fdeck HPF.

It works fine, I'm just wanting to get the rig more modular and a little smaller footprint.

I have both a Gator 6U-S and a 4U-S...along with the Monique rack and a Crest ProLite 3.0. They fit perfectly in the racks.

I use the 6 for my main rack.
Power Conditioner
Wireless
Monique
Power amp

I personally wouldn't worry about leaving empty space for ventilation. Both units are designed to work properly within a rack and mine stays very cool after hours of use.

Thanks for the reply Dave! So you have the shallow Gator cases? I actually think the dimensions are perfect for what I am trying to do. I just didn't have any experience with Gator cases. I have two SKB cases and they have been great. However, I do take excellent care of my gear so I'm not worried about them getting beat up.
I think the Gators should serve me well since they won't be banged up or treated rough.

Congrats!

My setup is fairly similar to yours tonally and it is the best tone I have heard in 30 years of playing. Monique -> power amp (Demeter) -> 1 or 2 Berg AE210's.

I used to be on the Amps forum and this thread all the time, but I don't even bother anymore. I have nothing new to add and nothing really to say as my rig hasn't changed in well over 3 years now and won't be in the forseeable future.

Anyone that hasn't heard a Monique paired with Berg AE or CN cabs really needs to check it out. Just incredible for any type of music IME.

P.s. Adding a MTD into the mix would amplify the overall tonal awesomeness. Just don't make any mistakes as every note will cut like a knife on any gig!

Great combination!

I used to own a rack Monique and a ProLite 2.0 and kept it in a 4U Gator rack. I am a big fan of the newer (locks on the lids) Gator hard cases. The old ones were absolutely terrible. Whoever thought loud, vibrating latches on the case portion was a good idea was a moron!

I also never had an issue with ventilation and I would expect the same would be true if you went with seperate 2U racks. Aren't both the Monique and ProLite rear ventilated? I forget as I now only have my Dovecage (had 2 Moniques at one point).

BTW, I am now using a Demeter 800W poweramp and really don't notice it sounding any better than the much less expensive ProLite. It is a great power amp.

I also had the shallow version of the Gator. It fits both units perfectly.

Important note, there is not a lot of room for power cables in the shallow version. I personally velcro-ed a power strip/surge protector to the inside of the lid and coiled the power cables still plugged into the lid. Worked perfectly for me and never left a power strip or power cable at home.:)

Thanks for the info Baird6869. The shallow Gator cases would reduce the footprint on the AudioKinesis 1203 cabs. That's what I'm looking at. A lot less mass on that stack. I've done the measurements with all the dimensions and everything should fit. I keep my cables velcro'd and tidy, so I don't think they will be an issue.

I think I'll pull the trigger on a pair and see how it works out.

Everything will fit in the shallow version. With a standard IEC cable it may be tight against the rear lid but it'll fit. I have right angle IEC's in mine. You'll probably also want RA plugs on the cable connecting the pre and power, unless you want to unplug it all the time.

When I was using the 4U case I had a thin power strip that slipped right down the side of the power amp. It all worked great.

I agree that the new cases are great. Light, reasonably sized, and the latches are on the lids so you don't have annoying rattles.

Thanks Dave! Yeah, all of my IECs are right angle. My pre/power cables are right angle as well. Sounds like the Gator is just what I am looking for.

Gettin' a new home (case) for Monique!

Well, I finally decided on what to get for a new Monique rack. I decided on a 3U SKB full size ATA rack. They are getting a little hard to find, but I found a new one at a good price and jumped on it. I already had a 2U for the Crest Prolite. Satisfied with the results!

I decided to go with the full size since the extra storage space in the back really comes in good for cables and other stuff.

I wound up sticking with the gator mixing bag. It's not a tight fit, but I had some high quality padding laying around to make it snug.
Since there is some extra space in the studioslip bag I may try to rig up some extra padding.

I put the m700 up for sale, mainly because I feel like I could accomplish my humble bass activities with something less, but the drummer just sent some premix tracks of the new album (or whatever you call a group of recorded songs that very few people will ever hear) and I must say the bass tone, recorded direct with the monique with no processing (that I know of) sounds pretty sweet. So I'm going to keep it for now.

He wanted to mic the cab, and did, but after hearing the DI just went with it. I'm not supposed to share because he thinks if our 3 fans hear it before it's completely finished it might sully our reputation but here's one I particularly like and it has no effects, just bass>monique>interface of some sort>protools.

I would love to try some of these Bergantino cabs to do some A/B testing. If any of you are in Los Angeles, let's hang! :)
