Jule Amps Monique part 5

Hey brother! Haven't seen around in a while. How's things?

Love the tie-dye tapestry thingies hanging in the background!

Hey!

Good...busy. Album came out end of December, we got booking representation and things have gotten increasingly hectic. I've been spending less time online and more time playing and working on playing...and holding down a day job!

I pull those tie-dies down unintentionally every few shows... ;) That's our 'home room' here in town. : )

Very cool! Nothing wrong with THAT!!

Okay!
Sorry! :):)
Rackmount Monique 2 space rack bag is extremely portable! It's a hair over 2 spaces as there is room above and below. It never runs hot.
It doesn't get the attention live that doves and bamboos get but people sure go, "hmmm what's that?" The simplicity of the front panel attracts musicians The sound is what really attracts everyone. The smiles from sound engineers are fringe benefits.

I sometimes think about Jule's 'white box' or something else flashier...the Mo'rack doesn't get the attention it deserves! Although as usual it gets some pretty high ratings once people have heard it. For this week's gigs I was offered the rig of the band we're going out with and our singer turned it down. She said "that guy's really nice and a great player, but he never sounds as good as you do...your amp is just way better sounding to me".

Here's a couple samples off the newly released album:

Nice job! The bass sounds great, and I really like your singer's voice. Did you record through Mo?

Yep. That's the Rastburst and Monique, run with what amounts to my 'live tone' it was the track on the album that took the LEAST amount of EQ and tweaking after the fact. We ran double tracks, one with the Mo' one with a U5...the producer being cautious about the bass tone and not having used the Mo'. After a couple weeks to mull over the result he came to me and asked if it was OK for him to just erase the U5 track. ;)

Wish I had used my setup last night. I was pressured into sharing backline which was apparently borrowed Mesa Muffqueef 150 combo or something...so I spent the night not hearing myself well, not wanting to hear it's tone well and worried about what it was sending FOH. Yuck. I think I'll be less of a nice guy on Saturday.

Stand up (Stand up)! Stand up for your rights! :D

I hate it when that happens! If it ain't your tone, it just ain't right!

Let me know next time your in Roch. If I can, i'll motor in and check you guys out.

The tracks sound fantastic and the bass tone is really excellent!
Thank you. I've got the sensitivity turned down a bit more than usual, right around 9 o'clock. Bass set at roughly 1~2 o'clock, treble rolled back to about 8 o'clock and the mids were riding between 10-12 o'clock depending on the song. I also use some passive roll off on my bass' treble control and some boost on it around 40hz as well...Dingwall with FD3/4L pickups run all in series.

We have a couple upcoming opening slots at FCS, but probably best to wait for I think March/April when we'll be doing some stuff at what was the old Water St. Music Hall...when it reincarnates.

Sounds great man. Nice tunes and nice playing. Umm I think the bass tone is a given ;).

Thought you guys would find this interesting: I recorded comparison clips of the Jule Monique, Aguilar DB750 & A Designs REDDI, in a variety of different styles, with a variety of different basses.

Now I know what I think, but what are your thoughts on how they compare?

I think, "Wow!."

Thank you for putting these together.

Very grateful to hear these. Having watched/heard/felt this coming to reality, I feel connected in a very good way. Thank you Bill.

Thanks Jule, I appreciate all YOUR support over the years. I have a copy of this (and a shirt) that I need to get out the door to you. You've heard a few mixes of things but I don't think they're the final versions.

Totally! Nice job Matthew. And it doesn't hurt, at least IMHO, that you used a little DMB riff in there either.

I realize that this will come across as a bit biased given this is a Jule thread and I play through a Tardis 700, but the Monique sounds the best to me hands down, and I would have said that had I not known which was which.

Absolutely agree Rob.

The DB750 had been my workhorse for years...but it's since been sold ;)

Sounds like a familiar story ;)

Really great tone and playing

Do you have line level and sensitivity knobs in or out?

I have the Sensitivity knob pulled and the line out pushed, but since the signal is straight DI and no cab, I don't think that the line level control is part of the equation.

This was the actual setup for most of the recording session, you can see the U5 on top of my rack. :

All the base riddim tracks were done 'live' with scratch vocals. From there, we worked layers of either overdubs or substitution tracks. By necessity our keys player played Nord and B3/Leslie to record, then we went back and recording all vintage rhodes, clav, Moog & acoustic piano to replace the 'fake' ones. Additional and sub guitar parts were done as needed, layered vocals and hand percussion, then finally there's obviously a good amount of dub magic provided by my personal non-export Roland RE-201 and a Fulltone tape unit, spring reverbs, etc. I was done after the initial tracking, but was there for all of the sessions to have a voice in the production, in terms of some of the tones/sounds, additional layered parts, and performance.

Very cool, thanks for all of the insight; the Monique is such a unique preamp that I'm always curious how others have dialed theirs in.

Pulling the Line Level knob out actually drives the tubes even harder than pulling out the Sensitivity knob does, resulting in an even thicker tone with more harmonics, even when only using the DI output.

I'd suggest giving it a try sometime, with the Sensitivity knob in of course, but you already have your tone pretty dialed ;)
