Jule Amps Monique part 5

David Allen and I did another round bass and drum playthrough videos in tribute to two incredibly talented musicians we've lost recently.

This tune in particularly is a great example of "less is more" in service of the song, and through the Monique as always; hope you enjoy it.

Have an issue with my line level pot seems to be cutting out giving intermittent volume and ultimately not giving me any signal. Pulled the pot into both in and out position but still not solved the problem. I've contacted @juledude and trust it's an easy fix - likely a failed pot or loose connection. Was bummed as it happened on my first live outing at a rehearsal with a 40 piece choir thing I do. It came at the end of a bad day. For the short periods I did have volume it was great so every cloud.

Ah, that sucks. Definitely the knob and not something like an intermittent something like a tube not seated well or a pin with some corrosion?

Had the hood off a few days ago just admiring the workmanship. All tubes looked fine and well seated. Been at work after rehearsal but free tomorrow to get the lid off again and see what the valves are doing. Julie has been in touch and hopefully just a faulty pot replacement so no dramas. D.I. out was working right up until that rehearsal as that's how I've been playing at home - mostly DI into Apollo Twin then headphones for home rehearsal and recording but via the fx return of my trusty Fender Bassman 100w combo for a bit of room volume at reasonable times of day!

The once over shall be done tomorrow just to rule out such eventualities..

Running Mo into a QSC k12.2 in struggling a bit. Sounds great running a DI to a board and an sux back to the K12. Even sounds pretty good with the XLR directly into mic level input. But can't get it matched up and sounding good running the line level out into the K12. Using line level input, trying different gain settings on the K12 and different combinations of push pull on the line level output and sensitivity.

Any insight into a solution?

See if you can find K12's input sensitivity. The manual has it accepting line and direct. If it sounds good coming back from the mixer then those sensitivities and impedances agree. (Yes impedances are present in an input too.)
Somehow the K12 isn't switched to take a line level input the way it takes mixer output or it's not designed to be a perfect match at that level.

I really don't get it. The few DIs I have here sound great run into the mic level input on the k12. 3 different mixers all pretty cheap send a line level signal that sounds great. But I can't get the line level out of Mo to sound good it baffles my mind. I continue to be frustrated.

First, is there anyway to bypass the DSP in the speaker? Doing that ADA conversion is going to steal some of the mojo away from Monique.

Which input are you using of the K12? Are you using input 1 set to line level, or are you using input 2 (hi z/ line level). I would be cautious with input 2 since it seems it was designed more for instrument level.

But as @chadds stated there could still be an impedance/ input sensitivity issue even though the QSC takes line level. I remember I had some issues using line level out of MO into some power sections a few years back when I first got MO. IIRC I believe MO is a true line level out @ 1.227 volts so you definitely want to make sure your feeding into a power section that accepts true line level.

As for input sensitivity, I remember if you didn't have the old crown macro techs set to the right input sensitivity you couldn't drive them correctly or possibly overdrive them.

When using line level on the QSC I only used channel B. I will look if there is a different with line level on channel A.

I can't say I've tried every dsp option but I did bypass. I will keep playing. Was hoping someone did all the leg work but I guess not.

I have not used the QSC. I've only used the power section of the puma, Crest pro lite, and the Minnie when I had the DC. Now I only have the Monique 700 tardis.

Let us know how you make out. Perhaps input 1 set to line level has a different sensitivity and will perform better for you. Good luck.

@peterpalmieri - just to problem-shoot voltage outputs, try a DI/mixer/etc in between.
Monique Line Out -> other DI -> K12.2.
The DI out of Monique is not the problem for him. Line level out into the k12 is the issue.

Using the line out of Monique into another DI is just going to knock the signal down to mic level which he has confirmed is not a problem for the k12, unless the independent DI out has a line level out, then perhaps he could try that.

Thanks gave that a shot didn't move the needle.

I'm starting to think they're just not a great match for each other. The line out on Mo in comparison to the XLR is brighter and more brittle. And the QSC is a bit brighter then your average bass amp. The Motown DI knocks off a lot of high end content and sounds really great. It gives you no control except the gain on the QSC but I can't get Mo to sound as good in any combination. If I still had a Reddi I'd like to hear how that would sound.

Not to make work for Jule but the DI & line outs sound exactly the same. Only some early units had a different DI trans that while pristine was not shall we say, "musical."

If they don't it could be what the outputs are seeing. Also the choice of cord may affect signal delivery. Balanced/unbalanced etc.

It can take a bit to gain stage. With my AER the DI from Monique worked great. The line with 1/4" out not so much. Needed to use one of those 1/4" to XLR males into the XLR line input of the AER. Perfect.

Point. Trying to match distinctly different pieces may take some tweaking, may work great or be a big fail. That fail is no reflection on the two units we are trying to interface.

I have a hard time believing the mic and line level outputs sound identical based on my own experience but yes. I blame on either piece if they don't pair up well.
I would have to agree. Unless the DI is going into a totally transparent mic pre, you are always going to get some coloration from the added mic pre gain stage. This could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the quality of the mic pre.

I also agree with @chadds that it may take some tweaking to get the two to play nice when using the line out, and some further trial and error.

I get that because as maisbass said the inputs would have different coloration and loading. My test was with the Berg IPs. In that case there is only one input for the plate amp. I could plug either the Monique's line or DI into it.

Trying to interface the Monique into the AER was trial and error. The AER sounds great the Monique could make it better. The best was into the actual instrument input set to line. It can be set to mic. Into the pwr amp in, effects in etc. just didn't work.
It took a careful setting of the input to get the most Monique while not over driving input. Now it's set and forget. Hilarious at first gig I did everything but crank the Master so it was timid. After one song lightbulb moment. Crazy how live switching left to right to left brain troubleshooting/playing tune is chaos. :)
