Jule Amps Monique part 5

Thank you, Jule.

I am now running, and will hereafter run, only 6SL7 in V1 and V2 of my Monique.

Yes. Everyone remembers correctly. I'm concerned about the doubling of the heater current. Monique was never intended for the octals that draw more than half an amp of filament current. She might be able to handle it short term, but I would not recommend a 6SN7 that draws 600 milliamps as a permanent replacement.

By example, a 6SL7 only takes 300 milliamps.

That sucks, dude.

I haven't had any of the above issues, and I hope James takes care of you. A 1yr warranty is not a great confidence booster on a $1000 poweramp IMO.

I do have persistent and annoyingly loud hum when Minnie is dimed or even turned up past 2:00-3:00, but it is perfect when Monique is dimed and i use the Minnie to control volume (usually between 8:00-10:00). Not my ideal scenario, but it has been like this since I got it in 2013 and is apparently "normal". Beyond that, the fan is too loud when turned on in my studio (I turn it off unless on a gig). Other than the above, mine has performed well.

Yeah, i agree. When i saw the one year warranty on his website, i was a little shocked. So i have to pay to ship it to him, the cost of parts, $85 an hour in benchtime, and to ship it back to me. :(...and whats to say this same issue wont just happen again 2 years from now?

And the fan is def too loud unless youre on a gig, but ive certainly never had any kind of hum like that at ANY volume....thats a no no in my book any day! Who said that was "normal?"

Hey all, been a minute! Ive been having some serious problems with my Minnie 800D recently and just wanted to see if anybody else has had similar issues. Intense overheating, sound cutting out when playing really low notes on the B string, and noticeable drops in headroom. Ive spoken to James Demeter already and he told me to send it to him, but im afraid its gonna cost me an arm and a leg since its conveniently past warranty. Anybody else go through this already? And if so, what did it cost?? Thanks!

Hey Mitch,

Sorry to hear about that. I have not had any shutdown problems with my Minnie. The only thing I've noticed is when I tried pulling the line out on Monique, the overall volume dropped immensely. I don't think Minnie likes seeing 1.227 volts, I think it prefers .775 volts. I confirmed that it is not a problem with Monique because I was able to do so with my crest prolite power amp.

Everything else with Minnie is the usual suspects stated here. Loud fan, and some hiss trying to run it at a high volume. Luckily I never really have Minnie past 9 o'clock. I hope James takes care of you.

Hope the gig is going well!

Ah, very interesting. I recently started using the line out in pulled out position and thats when things started getting really bad. Supposedly Minnies input can be trimmed so maybe thats an adjustable thing? I guess James would be te one to know. But it def sounds better with the line out pulled, but soon after the headroom drops like crazy....maybe the Hypex 700 is the way to go....its just so big! I love the size of the Minnie!

This is crazy timing, but I had a rehearsal tonight and noticed a rattle/loose part in my Minnie when I setting up.

Everything sounded great as usual, but I am concerned a bit.

Anyone else have this potential issue?

Jule,

Any thoughts?

Cheers!

Rattles are seldom good. Several bolts and nuts hold the amp in place. I know that, but I have never seen the innards of the Minnie.

YES! As a matter of fact, the very first issue I had with my Minnie was a rattling that I noticed when turning the amp to put it in its gig bag. Turned out a part of the board inside had cracked in half as if the weight of the part it held up was too much for it....I continued gigging with it like that until the cutting out issues began. I assumed it had to be due to that loose part flopping around and took it in to my amp guy. He said everything was still working, and glued everything back together. The cutting out issue continued, so it may not have even mattered. But who knows if its the same part in yours. Id get it looked at for sure.

In contrast, I bought an EA micro amp/cab from you 4 years ago. It was probably 5 or more years old at the time, well out of warranty. It developed a buzz. I emailed EA to ask for a schematic so my dad (used to run an aircraft radio repair shop) could look at it. He wouldn't give me one but told me to ship it to him. He fixed it and sent it back at no charge. Only cost me one way shipping.

Yeah my initial reaction was that I love the size of the Minnie. But then I read reviews here about how the M700 is more open on top..... So I say why not have both? I intend on using my Minnie as a small portable backup with a 3leaf enabler pedal as a preamp once my M700 arrives. :)

Sadly, ive already spoken to James and despite being the one who commisioned him to build the first Minnie, hes charging me out the ass....:(

While I understand the 'out of warranty' point of view, there are always so many other great small companies and builders who work with a certain 'spirit'...who have taken the time effort and expense to step up in similar situations. I'm sort of surprised that James didn't. I really like guys who build but 'take ownership' of their product even after the terms and conditions have run out in situations where a failure is obviously not caused by user miss-deed or abuse.

I would also consider much of the Minnie issues feedback that we've been hearing the result of a new product design that's in the beginning stages of refinement, and as such these things (like the humming, noise floor issues, some of the build issues that are starting to come to light) should be seen as lessons and opportunities to improve the end product. I truly appreciate that Jule took similar commentary in stride and DID generously upgrade Moniques already in the wild as well as incorporating that player feedback into the new production runs.

Obviously there should be some sort of a charge (he has a business to run; perhaps just covering shipping) but it should be reasonable, especially since you were involved with Minnie from the beginning. Not cool.

And to think I was considering purchasing one of James new bass amps..... This has changed my mind.

It was bugging me so I cracked it open.

The small beige board was loose. I tightened the 2 bottom screws and it is good as new.

I would strongly recommend that Minnie owners check all of the bottom screws from time to time. The board was close to falling off and that wouldn't have likely ended well.

Thats one thing I love about Jule. From day one hes only looked to better Monique and make sure that those who use it are happy. I was an early user of Monique (4 years now!) and jule was nothing short of incredible about making sure I had all the most recent upgrades as they happened. And all I paid for was shipping to him. Hes truly a special person and dealing with him and James is like night and day.

Youre very lucky! When i opened mine, that beige board was cracked in half! Still not sure how it could have happened as I treat all my gear incredibly well....

That same ugly snot-looking stuff (Silicone Aquarium Sealant) that a lot of us point-to-point folk use to hold heavy components in place is also very good to hold screws in place. A small "glop" of it on the nut or screw head will keep things like this from coming loose.
