Just for Fun: Do Basses/Brands have a Gender?

They must be male: Every one of those s**s-of-b*****s I ever owned or own now have made me crazy at one time or another.

. . . . . . he slowly released his grip on the neck as the pounding in his head and the other-worldly voices in the back of his head began to recede. He downed a quick bracing shot of brandy and counted off the next tune . . . .

Fortunately , we have the Romance languages (that evolved from Latin) to bail us out of this one.

Bass is a masculine noun. Although guitar is a femenine noun. So , if you just play bass , it’s a boy , if you play guitar , it’s a girl. If you happen to play bass guitar , you are in for a large bill on the hormone replacement therapy.

"Look you don't have the weak womanly fingers of a guitar princess. You, my friend, have the muscular stumps of a bass man!"

In Germany, there are genderized articles for nouns too. „Die Gitarre“ - the guitar has a female article. „Der Bass“ - the bass has a male article. I, personally, don‘t attach a gender to my instruments. Though I onced named them, and when I did that, I considered these articles, „die“ und „der“, so I gave my guitars girl‘s names and my basses boy‘s names. A Jazz I once had was called Fritz.
This also makes sense to me because basses have a low, thundering voice which wouldn‘t really fit a girl, would it?

Hi,

Right or wrong, sometimes inanimate items get gendered (e.g., New Beetles are "girl's cars", etc.). I think MusicMan basses are totally guy basses (edited for clarity!). Same for Peaveys and Gibsons, with possible exception of Tbirds. Fenders and Rickenbackers seem a bit more female.

Technically, no. Biologically, no.

But lots of folks tend to anthropomorphize animals and inanimate objects all the time. So just ask your bass, "What gender do you feel like?" Because we all know that feelings are the only thing that matters. And we can't make that decision for them.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
