Kala UBass Megathread, Part 4

so, I have a earlier mahogany/spruce acoustic fretless

haven't played it much - but, last night when trying to tune it up to pitch the D string tuner just popped

the gear broke off the stem and doesn't appear repairable

I thought I heard of D strings breaking back when these were first popular but....

has anyone else had a tuner break? Are these cheap tuners? Is there an upgraded tuner recommended?

thanks all

It has happened before. You want to keep an eye on the wraps of the strings. If you run out of wrap space the tuner can bind up - and snap.

Contact Kala. They will take care of you.

We are working on some special limited edition Ubasses in our custom shop right now.

Here is a photo of the bodies. More details coming soon, but I thought you guys might like to be the first to check out this eye-candy....

Oh man! Just when I thought I was set with my U-basses! Those are gorgeous.

We really like those kind of posts. Thanks! This kind of "eye candy" actually makes me drool :-)

I'm not a fan pointy basses, personally... ...maybe rectangular like a bo diddley?

Any guy who advocates pulling out all your frets with a pliers should be unafraid to lay a bass on a table saw to square it off to his liking.

Wondering what you are all using as a stand. My herc mini bass stand is too big, herculese make a uke stand and there is the woodie which looks interesting too but I'm not sure if the u-bass is too big or if there is enough ground room under it for the lead to remain plugged in.

I use a Kala wooden uke stand for my u-bass.
A right angle plug can stay connected.

It also fits a cheap metal Kala uke stand.

For my solidbody, I use a Meisel violin / uke stand.

It folds up very compactly.

Hey Mark, The custom shop solid bodies look great! Very inspiring. Are there plans to offer Pyramid strings for the solid body basses? Maybe even a 5-string set? Am I correct in saying that the Pyramids currently only fit the acoustic U-Bass?

Slaerts,
Here's the Herc Uke stand I use, it works great on the Ubass. There's just barely enough room for a straight lead, plenty of room for a 90degree lead.

And for those of you looking at strap options, GC sells a nice little leather Martin guitar headstock loop that hooks into your normal strap so you don't have to drill and mount a strap button on the heel. It looks like this - note the dashing Tiki strap to fool people into thinking this is just another Uke.:smug:
