Kubicki club?

I believe I use to own that bass. It was made with all pre Fender parts and Phil confirmed he built it himself. It was made right after the transition to Fender.

I had spoke with Brian a while back regarding this yellow Fender. It is the same pictures and it was NOT a pre fender. It is in fact a Fender with a 18v.

I hope your know your not getting a Pre-Fender....

Well, what your saying is; 337 basses where built at the Fender Custom Shop and then this one was built by Phil using pre Fender parts. I'm not trying to cause any problems or make false claims, I just remember passing on this bass because is was NOT built by Phil. Sounds really strange to me but, I'm open to learn here.

How did it get the serial number that is has?

No mater what, this seems to be an excellent and beautiful instrument. And, I know the new owner will find it to be excellent!

I could be wrong but I remember reading that even after Fender bought Kubicki Phil still built all the basses himself. The difference being the parts. The early Fender's were made from left over original parts.
All I can tell you for sure is that yellow Kubicki was incredible when I had it and I regret selling it. It should even be better since Phil serviced it.

It would be nice to have a definitive account of the nature of the deal between Fender and Kubicki. I know that it was a licensing deal, but the manner of the production seems to be a matter of some discrepancy. One thing that is obvious just from the serial numbers is that the rate of production during the Fender years was much, much higher. In two years or so, many more basses were made than during all the other years combined. If Phil was indeed making them, he must at least have had some help, or automated the process in ways.

I have had all four production models, so to speak--a pre-Fender, an early Fender (18v), a later Fender (9v), and a post-Fender. The differences between them were pretty subtle. If I had to rank them, I would put the post-Fender as the nicest (exceptionally resonant body), then the early Fender (I still have this one, a fretless 34" scale Factor 4--best fretless I've ever played), the pre-Fender, and then the late Fender. I put that one last, but it was still a really great bass. It was just a tick away from the others in terms of fit and finish (although still way better than ANY Fender instrument I've ever owned) and I prefer the 18v. preamp for more versatility. I think like anything else, there will be variations between instruments and they would really need to be evaluated individually.

From my experience, I would have been tempted to buy that yellow one from The Low End had I spotted it. I think the Fender licensed Kubickis are among the best deals in used basses. If one is in good shape, and especially if it has the 18v. electronics, there would be very few basses in its class available at any price.

I would agree with Shriekback, I had an early Kubicki bass and now have an Early 18v Fender, there doesn't seem to be any difference that I can tell in them, I played a friends 9v Fender Kubicki and it wasn't quite as versatile tone-wise but the body felt and played similarly to my early Kubicki's, especially seeing that now Kubicki's are around $4000 new I think the $1000 range for ANY model is a good deal!

Whatever my new bass is pre-Fender or not, I really don't care. As long as its clean and has the 18v pre.. Besides that, I totally trust my purchase from Brian Barrett at Lowend Bass Shop. I have always gotten nothing but the best of high-end used bass guitars from him. I think this will be my 4 bass from Brian.

Masoncole,

I meant no disrespect. Brain is a great guy, I've spoken with him several times. I just wanted to call it like I saw it and make sure you were getting what you were expecting. Several people here looked out for me when I bought my first Kubicki, and I just wanted to return the kindness.

That bass in yellow really does look bad @ss.

Just a little FYI, Phil told me several years ago that he built all Kubicki basses. He put the Fender 9v preamp in and put the stamp on the back of the neck on the FSC basses. Everything else is identical. I've owned both,no difference but the preamp.
