Kubicki club?

made specifically For the Kubicki.

It's different than the stock cases I am familiar with (smaller hard cases as would come with a vintage Fender) but no wonder it fits it so perfectly.

I bought my present Factor 4 used with a case that was larger, rather than smaller, than a standard case. Has anyone ever bought a proper case from Kubicki? I wonder what Phil charges for one, or if he even sells them without a bass.

I presume the bass is now in your possession then? How is it? As nice as you expected?

Yes! For 21 years of age,not too bad! Has a couple of cracks in the finish on top and 1 where neck sets in to the body. But overall not bad and it's a keeper! The neck is silky smooth. Has some noise in the the volume/bass & treble controls. It will need a new input jack . Came w/ a gig bag but wd like to have a hardshell case also. It is currently at my techs shop getting setup w/ nickel Dunlops. Ist time I've tried nickel in 20 years. I hope I like them. Will give you an update once I get back from shop.

If you contact Phil Kubicki about a case, let us know what he says. I don't want to bother him until I am ready to buy, but it would be nice to know if they are available to purchase separately, and, if so, what they cost.

That would be great. I have D'Addario Chromes (flats) on my fretless Factor 4 (below--sorry, I like showing it off) that sound great, but I only ever used steel roundwounds on my fretted Ex-Factors.

Looking at Oubabass' bass has made me miss my '93 Bahama Green Ex-Factor. Other than my Steinberger, the best bass I've ever touched, much less owned. Just thinking about a note would make it resonate. I really shouldn't have sold it, but my band at the time had broken up... you know how it goes. Anyway, I did sell it to a guy on the east coast who played in a reggae band. As I recall, he was really stoked with it. I hope he still has it as it would be absolutely perfect in that context:

That one above was my actual bass, but the color under most light was closer to one below (not mine):

i've a question :
my factor is dating 08 1989...and if i reade the topic, someone say that it is a Fender period and not a Kubicki "alone" factory...cause 08 (after buying kubicki by fender shop).
But i've a 18 v preamp with 6 positions switch...
do you think that this one is a really factor "pre fender" and may be a final stock of kubicki period before new build with 9v Fender preamp.

i am like you all, this bass is the most fantastic i played...i play also leduc bass (logabasss by french luthier) and this "french" bass is less powerfull and less confortable than the Ex Factor.

My Factor 4 is from May '89 (also during the Fender licensing period) and it also has the 18v electronics. That just means both of our basses were made using parts that were left over from prior to the licensing agreement going into effect. They are properly Fender Custom Shop Kubickis, but essentially the same as pre-Fender instruments.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it very much. As I detailed in a prior post in this thread, I've had Kubicki basses from all periods of their manufacture and their differences were very subtle. I slightly prefer the early Fender era bass I have now to the "pre-Fender" Ex-Factor I owned some years ago. I think that the whole pre-Fender hype is mostly just that, hype, drummed up by those with pre-Fender basses who were trying to sell them by claiming they were far superior. I do think that the odds of getting a really great Kubicki are higher among the pre-and post Fender era basses, but just because they were made in smaller numbers and perhaps were made with a bit more attention, but it would still come down to the individual instrument. I also think the 18v. electronics are a bit more versatile, but the 9v. preamp sounds great too and the pickups are the same.

Perhaps it is one of the things we could try to accomplish with this thread is to put this whole preoccupation with where in respect to a licensing agreement a bass was made to rest. As far as I understand it was mainly entered into by Kubicki in order to make his basses more available, via Fender's vast network of retailers, during a period of really high demand for the instruments. Far too much has been made of that, in my opinion.

The "Kubicki Shootout" article (http://mc2.freeservers.com/kubicki.htm) is a good read and has some useful information. Notice, however, that the author is basing his conclusions about whole "eras" of Kubickis from one or two samples of each. That is very, very poor science (not that the author was claiming a rigorous scientific method) and the results should be taken with a large grain of salt, so to speak. Had he had four other basses, his results could well have come out the opposite.

I am like you all, this bass is the most fantastic i played...i play also leduc bass (logabasss by french luthier) and this "french" bass is less powerfull and less confortable than the Ex Factor.

I have long admired Leduc basses--the "U-bass" fretless is especially stylish looking. It is nice to hear I am not missing out on something really special, although I would still like to try one some day. They are clearly Kubicki inspired. I would consider yourself very fortunate to have both.

By the way, if the color of your bass is like how it appears in the recent pictures, it is not Bahama green. See the last picture in my post above for the best representation of that color.

thx for the explanation.;)
i agree it s probably not baham green...but the pics are not like the reality...she's more green in fact. but really it's not bahama.

yes the leduc bass are fantastic too and i buy a new one in japan (logabass 4 strings..)...i'm waiting the postman...:hyper:

and i'm looking for a new kubicki too...

About a year ago (mabye more) I contacted Phil about rebuilding my bass (before the price hike). Cases were available at that time, and I'll look for the old email, but I think they were about $125 bucks + shipping.

Any further information about where Phil is operating these days? Someone mentioned that he's no longer in Santa Barbara...

Thx

Jeff

Thanks for the information regarding the case Jeff. That's less than I had expected.

Word here in the forum is that Phil has moved to somewhere in New Hampshire. An earlier poster gave this as a reliable email address through which to contact him: [email protected]

I will have to test it soon myself.

That would be awesome! I live in southern NH, and I have 4 X-Factors in various states of playability.

Removing shipping from the equation is all around good news (unless he's 3+ hours north or something - which is possible) as with the price jump, the rebuilding thing is pretty expensive.

I wonder if this was a "retirement" move.

Jim Mouradian is local to me, and knows Phil from way back. I'll try calling him first and see what's up with Phil. I'd hate to bother him during retirement, but I'll be bummed if he is giving up the craft....
