To further complicate things, try looking at what the end grain at the tail is doing in each of these combos. 
I don't think I have enough meds to push it that far

Crack the shells and cast them in epoxy? Then turn knobs?
I mean.... you don't want just raw dog wrinkled nutz hanging off yer bass...?

No...yeah...I'm on board... like I said... but maybe...What's wrong with just a half a walnut shell as a knob?
Inlay that natural wrinkled nut shell... as the *dome* of an otherwise nicely turned walnut knob.

I don't have a lathe and never worked with epoxy.
I forget what thread I was reading, but someone was using a lot of walnut in a build and someone made a joke about shell knobs.
I collected those last fall and then found out that nothing else will grow near a black walnut. So I still have them. Plus I don't have the right soil at the new place.

Third one down is my favorite. It almost looks bookmatched and the grain lines follow the body shape. On a rift sawn board I like having the quarter sawn part near the middle and the flatsawn part near the outside, the tighter grain of the quarter sawn part seems to go better with the long lines of the neck.
I assumed you were going to make dye from the black walnuts and use that for the finish. Then I remembered you're supposed to use the husks, not the shells.
I had them all separated by species in ziplock baggies, in that container. I forgot about them for a while and all the husks rotted. There was a lot of black juice in the baggies. I kinda sorta knew that the stuff stained and some people make natural stain from it, but I didn't think to save it. Even if I did, I have enough oddball projects stashed all over that I will never get to. Chances are, it would have been in the fridge for 3 yrs and then got tossed. However, I do know of 2 places where I can get more in the fall, if I ever want to try it.
Either 2 or 3 for the walnut patterns. Leaning towards 3.

I painted my brass knobs and knocked 4 of them over while they were wet and had to strip and redo them. It was a big PITA so I want to use them now.
Combo #3 is the winner. It was the one I liked best after looking at the pics and you're the 3rd person to like it as well.
I'm going to mark it up on the board and go with it. I could easily waste 2 more days moving the paper around and not making a decision if I let myself.

This look better, worse, or meh?
One thing I just thought of, this pine is almost white. The walnut with finish will be a lot darker and possibly look slimmer. I do kinda feel like the upper horn is still just a tad much at this point though. But I can always remove more.
Maybe I can throw some stain on the pine and see if darkening it makes it look better.

The upper horn looks a lot better now.
The bevel I suggested?...I dig it,
...but then again, now it has a sort of Keisel vibe ...
... without the contrasting wood
... if that's cool with you.... then groovy. ... nevermind what I think.
Yeah it was a little blocky before. ... but...
I only encouraged you to keep carving... because they're practice wings. And figured you would enjoy the process and discover contouring that YOU like.
