Here's a link to Bartolini pups available from the Bass Place in Arizona: Invalid Link Removed. The P2 shape is very close in size to the stock 55-01 pups. It looks like there are two kinds of split coil pups but one of the links isn't working. The quad coil pup might be a better option because you can coil tap it to do a P configuration and reverse P configuration. They've got their split coil and quad coil prices mixed up on the main page but they're correct when you look at the individual page for each pickup.

Funny enough i was looking at that page this morning but couldn't see the P2's. guess i got as far as the P's and didnt bother scrolling down.
Anyway, they look just the job. i already have a coil tap switch on my 55-01 so if im getting the NTMB taken out i can use the switch for that.
Its just an idea at the moment, next i need to get a quote from a workshop but it will be an interesting bass if i do get it done.

Wish I did! I think the pickups are okay but the EQ in mine is too limited. A small adjustment makes a big difference - I don't like that. I'm replacing the preamp with an Audere 3ZB in september. I'll see how much I like the pickups at that point.
Here is mine:
Nordstrand Dual Coil pickups
Passive (volume, tone, blend)
1meg volume pot
Parallel/Single/Series switching for each pickup
I was really disatisfied with the MK-1 preamp and decided to go all passive. I'm a set it and forget it kinda guy, so I do all my EQ on the amp now and I am much happier.
The new wiring provides a ton of tonal variety. I especially like to run the neck pickup in parallel and the bridge pickup in series.

That's so similar to mine that it's spooky. I originally had the small tuners like yours. Lakland got me a new set of Hipshots for $60 and they dropped right in. I think yours, like mine, is one of the first 200 made. Thicker headstock than standard and the heel of the neck is different - I had gotten a pickguard, but the radius of the made it not fit without a gap, so I sent it back.
I've also got Nordstrand dual coils in mine. Mine seem to lack output to me, at least compared to my P-Bass pickup equipped basses. The original owner has a Bart NTMB-L pre put in, but I'm not a big fan of active, so like you, I'm going to go passive or get a preamp from David Raven Moon and have passive controls.
The original owner also had a switch that chooses the center frequency of the mid installed, so I have six holes to fill, not five like yours.
Mine is going to be like a dual pickup L-1000 - two volumes, bass cut, treble cut, two coil switches for single coil, parallel and "single coil with bass boost" - one for each pickup.
How do you like yours? It's very similar to what I'm planning...

i've never had a pre that i haven't ripped out & made passive, ( as i'm a total passive lover ), but to me, it doesn't sound " active ",, it's just a boost & cut of the frequencies of the pickup ( if that made sense ), & i can live with that
That's cool. I mostly leave the EQ flat anyway and probably will as well with the Audere, I just want to be able to change things and have those changes sound good to my ears. Plus, I'm attracted to the active blending that the Audere offers.

There's an internal gain trimpot on the ntmb...you could tunr that up if you feel you're lacking gain.

what do you guys recommend for strings for my 55-01, ive got the d'addarios that were on it when i bought it. i am about to do a full setup on it finally, ive had it for a couple months now. i always use dr strings on my 4 strings but i heard the b string is not good on the hi beams that i usually use. i would say that my style is pretty close to Ben Kenny's from incubus, but i like to get my slap on occasionally too. i would like something w/ a nice punchy, low and focused sound for the b string if that helps.
I use primarily Lakland strings on all my Lakland basses, both the nickels and steels.
I also used to run D'addario's nickels on 5502 (before I sold it).
Both make for excellent B strings...

I was wondering about the headstock difference between the early -01/-02's and those out more recently. I have a 55-01 fretless and a 55-02 fretted, both with serial #'s beginning with 02xxxxxx. They both have the thicker headstocks and the mini-tuners. The -01 is in Candy Apple Red. The -02 is natural, but the finish seems to be yellowing with age. When did the headstock change occur?

I am going to install an Audere 3ZB but it's going to be more like a 6ZB. For $20 more you can purchase a 6-way rotary Z-mode switch that allows for these settings.

I use my Z switch all the time, even during songs.
I love what it does. Shear genuis...
I'm also going to install USA Barts with individual parallel/single coil/series switches. I'm not sure I'll ever need another bass!
I don't want to but I'm going to have to go with a bass/treble stack. I don't really want to install another knob 'cause that's going to cramp up the control layout. I'd rather use individual knobs for all of the controls, but that's the way it goes.
