I have been reading about the Audere JZ3 and the East DJ Retro preamps. I want something to just drop in with no mods to be done. I know that the Audere requires drilling on the plate and that is ok.

What pickups Nordy's, Barts, etc.?

I know this is all a personal taste type thing but steer me in the right direction.

You can order the Audere with a DJ plate, and it's no soldering- VERY easy install.

I'll need to further cut myself from the Lakland community by buying a new pedal and cutting off some funds and buying a Hardwire DL-8 delay/looper in the near future.

It's more of a necessity than a want because I'm a two man band and cannot do everything at once.

A Lakland is on my Christmas list :D (4 months away...)

I have a DJ5 with an Audere (and Chi's). It seems pretty benign when 'Z' mode is centered (as advertised). But there are lots and lots of different tones available when combing the 3 band EQ with and without Z-Mode. My bass is set up with MTD nickels, and I use it when a more modern and/or aggressive tone is needed. It has that in spades. But I can also dial it way down and have it be a good kitty when necessary. My JO5 also has Chi's and it runs passive with flats, and I'm not changing a thing on that bass. It is absolute butter.

But if you're gonna go active, I can only say nice things about the Audere.

Hey guys....another late night with the band and the Lakies did not disapoint. I could go on a huge rant about the gig, as this was our first gig with the new band, but all in all everything worked out in the end. Outdoor gig with a nice stage, and minimal PA support (vox, acoustic, etc.). Ran the Glaub through my Eden WTX500 and Eden 212xlt-4, and the tone was to die for. I am really wondering if I need anything besides the Glaub. Tone, tone, Tone.........pics will be up tonight

Couple of quick thoughts and questions.

1) Are you wanting to change the pickups and preamp to fix the output issue, or do you not like the tone?

2) There are TONS and TONS of passive basses out there with the same output as your bass that work just fine in any environment. If he had the gain at 2 or 3, my answer is still "so what." That's what the gain knob is for. He could have turned it up to 5 or 6. Does he know to check for an input pad as well and make sure that is off?

3) What kind of DI where you using? Direct out on your head or a passive DI box of some kind?

4) A J-Retro will change the sound of your bass and make it sound totally active. Since you like active basses, you'll probably like that as well, but if your goal is to have a passive bass in the arsenal, please don't put a J-Retro in there! Keep experimenting with what you have. If you do put an active preamp in, the Audere will feel much more passive than the J-Retro and give you an output boost.

Let us know more about these questions and we can help. There a thousands upon thousands of Jazz basses and clones out there that are totally passive and the output is not an issue. Let's figure this part out first before you decide to start gutting the instrument.

Yeah, my first thought was that if you went from an active bass to a passive bass and didn't change the gain, you will definitely see a drop in volume, that's what the gain control is for. That is also why a lot of amps have different inputs or a pad switch. As a recent passive convert (active basses exclusively until about a year ago), I would say don't be afraid to crank the gain a little and give it a couple weeks.... and if you still don't like it, go Audere.

Definitely. If there is a DI output on the head, then setting the input gain might be critical. Depends on how the DI out is wired, before or after the gain structure. If there is an output gain knob, or a mic/line switch, then you definitely might have to play with that when going from active to passive. Same goes for using a DI box of some kind.

Fact is that any passive bass through a decent DI box will have as much output as a microphone. If you aren't getting enough signal to the board, then something is wrong somewhere else. No need to gut a bass to fix it.
