Hey lads - answer me this riddle - I've got a Skyline Joe Osborn 5er, which I am led to beleive had Lindy Fralin pickups but now has Lakland brand pickups. How can I tell what mine has? I bought my bass recently "new" from my local distributer as a demo model since they no longer carry Lakland, and I think its sat in a case there unopened for a few years. Serial is 03041602 - what info does that portray?

cheers!!

I believe it would be Fralins since it is an '03....mine is an '06 and it has Fralins.

thanks - gee it had sat there for a few years then!! I got it for a great price as it was literally taking up space in their warehouse and hadn't been played in a while. I should take some nice pics then ey...

I'd love a nice tort guard, but was quoted abut $220 Aus for a genuine Lakland (jeanies) one thru a current Lakland stockist...ouch.

Looking for a Lakland bassist...

Yesterday (August 22) I was at the Sweet Corn/Blues Festival in Normal, Illinois. Around 3:30 or so there was a band playing and the bassist had what looked like a Decade with Chi-Sonics in it and a weird shaped, cream colored pickguard. He also had a newish StingRay (HS), and Epifani cabinet and a really tiny head. The band was a four-piece with a guitar (Natural fiinsh Les Paul), drums, and local sax ace Gerard.

I'm really interested in both the bass this guy was playing AND the amp.

BTW, I thought the Lakland sounded better out front. The 'Ray's bottom just took over and didn't so much drive the band, but seemed to stick out as a separate part... But he said he had some "technical difficulties" when he switched over.

Anyone recognize the band?

Thanks!!

John

It still looks great, but it has taken a beating over the past several weeks. That bass is on its way to being "reliced"
That is a thing of beauty, I've never been a huge fan of birdseye before, but jeez, this is incredible.

Fretless 55-02 arrived today, and......

I still suck at fretless!!!! It's been a long time since I've owned one and actively played, so I'm sure I'll get back to where I was before, which wasn't much. I think I might send this one off too Chicago for some special care. Some of the notes pinch a bit too much in certain spots. I used to sand my previous fretless basses with a radiused block, but since this is a compound radius board, I'm afraid to mess with it.

glad you got it!!!! practice.....practice.....practice.....and play it live...this will "force you" to be good at it.

that is what I did and am not "somewhat" comfortable with it on the songs where I do not have to do any fast changes or major runs.....I am WAY far off from alot of but can hold my own on some less complex fretless riffs....

I find it fun and challenging.....keep at it and don't give up....

good luck!

Hey guys,

Im in need of a 5 banger. I have looked at EBMM SR5, Fender, Schecter, etc. and am yet to try a Lakland.

They are usually had for cheaper, or close to the above basses.

I play mostly funk, R&B, hip hop, blues, jazz, etc.

What Im wondering is, should I take a look into the 55 series, or whatever you offer up!

Im a jazz bass guy, so a thin neck is all my thing.

I know it probably sounds stupid, but I thought I would ask you guys instead of starting a new thread.

a 55-01 may be what you need....if you want more versatility, a 55-02 is GREAT! the neck is not as thin as a J bass but it is not bad....I find the neck very comfortable....

all of the lakland 5ers (with the exception of the DJ5) have the same neck profile so if you like the J sound, try a JO5...however, for more variety, I would try a nice used 55-01 or 55-02 first....MHO!

Im looking for some variety from my flat stringed Geddy. I need something bright, with lots of crisp attack.

The 55 series seems like it has some awesome tonal options, with a JMM configuration.

you just described a 55-02!

BTW - off topic....I have not been on a on a couple of days since I had to take my son to college...came home and wanted to play my beloved Lakies....go on here and I have 17+ pages to catch up on....how can I preactice when i have soooo much info to catch up on????

dang!
LOL!

Ok guys I am calling on some help here to help me make a couple of decisions.

Today I put my, new to me, DJ5 through the paces at 2 church services. I love the feel of the bass but the output was really lacking. This is the first all passive / single coil bass I have owned. Without changing any settings on my side (amp, DI, etc) the soundman literally had my gain at 2 or 3 oclock and the slider almost all the way up and my signal to the board was still very weak. For the first time ever he and everyone else told me to crank my amp up.

Without going into "fixing the soundman and system problems" I would like to get an onboard pre and change the pickups.

I do prefer a modern sound but do like the passive tones. Help me decide which pickups and pre to buy.

I have been reading about the Audere JZ3 and the East DJ Retro preamps. I want something to just drop in with no mods to be done. I know that the Audere requires drilling on the plate and that is ok.

What pickups Nordy's, Barts, etc.?

I know this is all a personal taste type thing but steer me in the right direction.

I like nordy pickups, but the output will probably be the same. There is absolutely nothing wrong with lakland pickups. Passive basses just have lower output than active. I am almost a strictly passive player and I never have an issue.
