So I usually gig, at least 95% of the time, with one of my 44-01 or 55-01 basses, usually strung with flats. That being the case, my 44-02 with medium rounds doesn't see a lot of playing time except for studio stuff, or on the rare occasion that I pull it out for a bar gig. Since all the venues in NC are smoke-free now, I have been pulling it out a bit more and have played all my shows and rehearsals this week with the 44-02 to really 'get to know' it even more, even after having owned it for a couple of years now. I really have been working on getting the baseline EQ and pickup settings nailed down for my favorite Jazz, MM, P-Bass, etc. sounds, as well as approximating the 44-01 sound that I love. I had a general idea of what I was going for in most cases, but I really did my homework over the last few days and got things fleshed out with some quantifiable 'definite' settings. After much experimentation I have found that the only sound I can't nail to my liking is a P-Bass sound. It gets close, but not close enough. I can live with it for a gig of course, but it looks like I'm going to have to add a Glaub to my arsenal at some point to really get that P sound I need/want. My favorite setting outside of the full-on both-pickup sound is splitting the MM pickup to the front coil, panning to about 1 or 2 o'clock (if looking at the bass directly), and boosting the treble and bass to taste. It gets close to my 44-01 sound that I love, but with a lot more girth and power. Heaven! Anyway, since I'm having GAS pains lately I thought I'd share my story of 'rediscovering' my 44-02 all over again. I was seriously thinking about trading it for a Glaub for a hot minute but then realized how much else I'd be missing out on.

is yours fitted with LH-3? Them guys call me picky but it does seem to me that what the Barts really do is a closer P sound

Yeah it's hard to get a P bass sound out of a jazz pup. It's similar, but not the same.

Just got her in the mail Tuesday. My first 5 string and it's making the transition very easy for me. This bass has taken over my Warwick as number 1. And it sounds so nice!

I can't speak for a Darkstared Decade, but in the 44-64, it is very open and round. Clear highs and mids, and deep throaty low-mids and lows, and growl when you dig in.

That's what I wanted to hear. haha I love the looks of the Darkstar pickups. So, I think my next Lakland will have those in it. I see you can never have too many!!

I have come to my senses...especially after a heart to heart talk with my luthier of choice (Carl Pedigo)....this bass (yet to be named) will get a "minor" faccelift (in stages)

1) painted headstock
2) P-styled minty pickguard

it will remain passive.....
