LAKLAND OWNERS GROUP #48

Ok, quick question. This literally happened 30 seconds ago, and you seem a knowledgeable bunch...
I was putting new strings on my acoustic bass guitar, and the E-string didn't snap so much as just suddenly unravel. Never happened to me before, obviously I'm doing something wrong. Some investigation, it turns out my bass is 32-inch scale, and the strings I was putting on (D'Addario phosphor bronze) were for a 34-inch scale bass. Is it possible I did a bad thing? Is there any point going back to the shop tomorrow, reciept and evidence in hand, and asking for a replacement set, or will the same thing happen again?
I know that this has absolutely nothing to do with Lakland, but like I say, I regard you fine gentlemen as sages of wisdom!
Basically, was it my fault or the strings? I've got four basses, so I'm well used to changing strings, but I've never changed acoustic bass strings before, so if there's a different technique or something, do let me know.

I'd say that there's a very good case for trying to get your money back ... UNLESS (and I think this is unlikely) there are instructions on or in the packaging saying "don't wind the unsilked part onto the post" or something similar.
If you'd bought a set a flats, then winding the unsilked part onto the post will put a lot of strain on the core, and can result in breakages, and sometimes there will be a warning about it in the packaging.
But (IMHO) I think you should return the string (or set) as faulty.

returning opened set of strings is like trying to retun swimwear. I've never been successful at either.
Hey Jason, it's usually very feasible. Shoot an email to Leo Lopez and see if you can set something up. I imagine the guys are heading back from NAMM. Also, if you're able to get pizza or something, shoot me a PM and maybe we can work something out. I work downtown.

I was considering that too, so I asked Nordstrand and Stew McKinsey answered. He recommended Big Splits instead of Big Singles in the first place but described them as "close to chi sonics with a bit more highs to them". Not "quite" the J-tone in the bridge position.
They also advise a 70-ies wind for the Big Singles as a second option for me, but that they would have to do completely custom.
Also, last but not least,
"There are a few things I can recommend for you but first I have to tell you that the Chi-Sonic pickups are not a standard size. This means you will probably need to open the pickup cavities to accept our models (32mm x 100mm for 4 string, 32mm x 108mm for 5 string)."
Probably the least expensive thing for me that may get me there is getting a used set of Lakland singles and encasing them in the ChiSonic covers. I wonder how the open magnets design would work inside those metal casings, hmm hmm
Too bad the case is obviously not wide enough to accomodate for P-coils in the neck position...
No problem! I thought that there were three of those basses, when you bought yours, and one had just that. J pickups in ChiSonic cases.

There was Denis Black one, Midas , which definately had Chis, then a Canday Apple Red with maple that was on Ebay(may still be). I thought the CAR had the Jazz in Chi casings
You are correct John...I almost bought the CAR one from Leo, until he told me they were not real Chi's
Bass delivered today! Even better then I expected! Really beautiful in person! My first maple necked Lakland...man...I see what you guys love about them! The neck is super compy for my big hands. It has a deeper profile then other Laklands. Nice grain showing through the finish...totally stoked camper!
Now the tone...
Super thick, clear, and juicy highs. Big punch you in the gut lows, and jab and uppercut mids. The mids have more texture then my Glaubs. They hit you a little higher in the frequency range. If the Glaub's tone is a big wrestler, the 44-51's tone is an Ultimate Fighter, if that makes sense. Sharper cutting tone..that sits a little higher. Totally lovin' it!

Hi Lakland Peeps! I just wanted to say I recorded a track in a studio in Dayton, Ohio last night using my 55-02 LH-3 for the first time and was simply blown away how well it sat in the mix. I am officially hooked on my Lakland!! How do I go about getting a LOG# I'm so proud of what I thought was going to be my backup bass, I'ts going to see an equal share of gig time for now on!
