I think the top loading bridge is a pretty great thing and saves a fair amount of time and tussle.

Probably more tangible benefit than through-body stringing... just sayin'. ;)

Well I finally took the Lakland plunge. I picked up a new 55-02D (maple neck, quilted maple top) from Bass Central. Now the fun starts....:hyper:

I'd agree. For me, it's not important enough to choose one bass over another, however it does simplify things and reduce the risk of accidental damage to the finish from ball-ends and silked ends (particularly when extracting an already kinked silked end).

+1 A top loading bridge makes removing old strings fast and easy, while decreasing the likelihood I'll scratching the finish while changing strings; advantage, Hipshot A. ;)

Are you listening, Lakland? :D

Personally, I prefer the current bridges. I've had many hipshot bridges on other basses, and they all worked great. Those basses where more modern looking instruments and I didn't mind them. On the Laklands, the more vintage look of the oval bridge looks best to me. I personally find that the time required to put the strings through the hole to be minimal. When I remove them, I loosen them just enough and then clip the ends near the tuner so they slide right out.

So you're throwing away strings after removing them?

If I'm replacing a set of worn out strings, I'll cut them to quicken their removal. But, that doesn't happen very often; I leave TI flats on my basses for years at a time.

I occasionally like to try new strings and move strings from one bass to another, and I don't want to damage the strings or the bass in the process. I find it far easier to swap used strings when I don't have to pull them through a small hole in the bridge.

Aesthetics are nice, and I, too, like the way the Lakland bridges look. But, IME, a triumph of style over substance is usually a pyrrhic victory.

Different strokes, YMMV, etc. ;)

Well new 55-02s go for around >2.5K down here to give you all an idea of the increase in price (lucky I got mine from the US), and after doing a quick search I'd say that price is fair for a used 55-01. They go for about 1850 new.

I am so pumped! My new (used) USA Hollowbody Deluxe came in today. I love it! The neck is just amazing. The neck is even better than my JO4 neck, and that one is fantastic. I am usually not a big Bart fan, but the Bart's on this bass are great. It has JO Flats on it and I love flats - have them on most of my basses. I may try rounds to experiment, but right now, this guy has a WIDE palate of tones available. I can't put it down. Action is perfect, frets perfect, and zero dead spots (thank you graphite neck reinforcements)!
Plays like a dream, well balanced, and light (weighs 8.25 lbs!).
Top notch fit and finish. Nice flame maple top, and the finish looks like a '59 sunburst that you see on a lot of Sadowsky's.

The East Indian rosewood with birdeye maple dots is really beautiful. Tried to show that in the pics, but they really don't do justice here.

Congrats! I drooled over that one when it was up for sale--just beautiful. Lakland HBs are great.

I'm glad I wised up and pulled my FS listing for my Skyline HB Fretless. There's something about these beasts that kept calling my name. I agree about the Barts.

Enjoy your new/experienced family member.
