LAKLAND OWNERS GROUP #50!!!

I have done a search but I still need a little clarification on the coil switch on the 55-02s and the 55-94s.

Is it front coils/parallel/back coils or front coils/series/back coils?

I think it has to be parallel in dual coil. I'd think it would kick up the level a bit going from sc to series (my 55-01 wired that way does).

Edit

With a full confession up front that I am not a wiring expert, I looked at the LH3 diagram, which shows the 02/94 setup, and IF wire coloring and usage is consistent between brands (Black/White/Green/Red), it's definitely parallel--both neg leads go to ground. If it was series, I believe one neg would be on a switch pole and only one would finish the series circuit, going to ground.

Oh no !!!

Wait... what?

On a completely unrelated note, is Lakland no longer offering 34" scale 5 strings? It looks like they changed it back on the website for all 5ers.

Opinions please,.... I'm buying a twin to my DJ5, a new old stock '04 black with rosewood board, aero's, very clean! My 06 has been modded, j retro deluxe pre, nordy pups, jack relocated to the side of the bass.

I'm thinking of having one of them, probably the modded '06, defretted,:hyper::eyebrow::D.

My logic is that switching between fretted and fretless is going to be much easier, no adjusting for muscle memory, that sort of stuff. Scale, spacing etc is going to be identical. Seems like a solid plan.

My two concerns are, I'm a bit worried about the binding when pulling the frets, and, wondering if the inlayed blocks could be troublesome on a fretless.

Has anyone else been fool enough to try this on their Lakland with blocks and binding? If so , would love to hear your opinions. Thanks in advance.

To avoid damaging the binding maybe try heating the frets with a soldering iron before removing them. They seem to come out much more cleanly that way as opposed to going at it with a butter knife. Also, I'd recommend having the board coated to avoid any sort of inconsistencies in the fingerboard surface. I've seen a few fretless basses with blocks and binding but they were were all coated.

These are far from expert opinions, just thought I give my .02¢.

No. Don't do it.

Kwesi, if i do it, going to have a pro do the defret. I've done the "tear it all to hell" defret job in my younger years. Definitely not going to go for a hack job on this bass. A fretboard coating might be in the works as well. This is still in the "just thinkin about it" stage. I really love the DJ's and definitely don't want to destroy one by being impulsive.

Macri,...you're still first dibs if I don't do the defret. Don't worry too much, you may still wind up with one of these basses. ;)

Since you already have another one of these exact same bass, mods notwithstanding, I say go make one of 'em fretless, lol. If you're having a pro do it I'm sure they'll be able to get the frets out without much fuss but if you're worried about it, you could swap the electronics in each bass and make the one without blocks and binding fretless. Either way, seeing as the boards are rosewood, I'd recommend some sort of coating. Rosewood boards can get chewed up pretty quickly with roundwounds. I had a had a bass that confirmed this a little while back, lol. Of course, if you're not planning on using rounds then it's not as big a of a deal.

If it were me, I would find out the price difference between an extra neck and the defret job to see if the cost is worth saving a neck that is intact and (assuming because it's Lakland) plays great. If it's too much, rock the defret.

Just my 2c

All Skyline DJs have Blocks and Binding, but it was a good idea in theory :)

As a former DJ owner, I think the binding would really be problematic even if a pro was doing it. But I could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that the natural DJs with black blocks had no binding. So snagging one of those necks, if I'm right, could be an option.

Question for you Lakland experts. My Lakland, a 2010 Skyline 55-60 Custom, is just about two months old. I have had a problem with "warble" sounds . . . kinda the note warbles or oscillates like it's out of tune. It's kinda like the sound when you play octaves, and one is out. Get the picture? I just finished a three-and-a-half hour gig, and all damn night I kept hearing out-of-tune notes, yet my left hand fingers were in the correct spot(s). It's done this since the day one . . . I even went over the setup, which I am very good at! It was spot on, intonation was slightly off on the G. It is "in" tune!

I have three other basses - a Fender MIA Jazz and P Bass and an Ibanex SRX 5 string, and they do not do this at all, which tells me that I am playing quite correctly! I have a set of D'Addario Chromes (flats) ordered to see if it's the strings, but these will be the fourth set of strings since I got it!

I'm on the verge of dumping this bass . . . anyone else have this problem, or am I going wacky?

Are you using tapered strings?

I don't have any insight. But you really should talk to Lakland about this before you even consider selling the bass.
