Good luck......what is the end game? Are you thinking of forming a band; is the drummer auditioning you for the rest of the band; just for fun (that is allowed)?
Kind tough when it is just. Rythym section...you almost have to carry the tune
Just decide who sets the tempo and follow that tempo......most of all have fun with it....

It started out for me just learning to slip in the pocket and hang with it, working on my timing, catch changes quickly and smoothly - stuff you need to know. I've been taking lessons for a year playing with a click and my iPod. My teacher pushed me to get playing with live people, specifically drummers, so I can build on those things.
The first jam went well. We're both laid laid back, both just really wanting to have fun with the music, and both of us would like to play in a band with the right people, but we're not forcing it. We compared musical tastes and playlists and found a lot in common. He has things he's working on (a drum fill is not a race back to one) and my list is in the first paragraph. It was an enlightening experience for us both. We used iPods to keep the melodies and we'll probably keep doing that until we get a singer and/or guitarist to jam with us.
Four hours passed before we knew it. At the end of that afternoon, I'd had a blast and was ready to go again. He said nice things about my ear and timing and asked me to think about if I'd be interested in starting a band with him.
We've had a 3-week break due to a death in his family, but we're back at it tomorrow. I've done my thinking, and I'll give him an answer I see how tomorrow goes.
