save the Fender and let it grow in value (dunno why they do...when I started playing in the 80s I was told to stay way from 70s Fenders..."they are no good" and I did...shoulda bought one (they were CHEAP in those days!)....would have helped me buy 2-3 Lakies now!)

I will keep the Fender. It's a fantastic bass and it works in many situations, especially in the studio. It sounds deeper and older than the Lakland :)

Last weekends project complete, I swapped out the LH3 preamp for an Audere classic 4 band (go figure) & couldn't be happier!
No more poppin the lid to make adjustments, all them meaty mids are now at my fingertips.
This has unleashed the beast & this sucker is meaner that ever!
Configured Vol, Bal, Hi Mid, Low Mid, Bass/Treb (stacked pot) & beast mode switch (coil tap).

I think the LH3 is a good preamp the -94 series as it adds a lil sumthin to that configuration.

It just didn't work for me in the -07 or the active Decade w/chi-buckers, those pickups don't need any help.
It sounded nasally, almost like the sound was coming out of a tunnel or a tube or sumthin.
Didn't matter what frequency I used it had that sound, bummed me out.

The Audere 4 band lets the pickups speak for themselves, it only boosts/cuts what's already there.
Dare I say a frequency adjustable passive preamp? :eek:
No colorization, just the flexibility to enhance what your pickups are already sayin.

After all isn't it the Dark Stars, Aeros, Lindys, Chi-buckers etc that we lust after in the first place?

As always! AWESOME!!
Man ya have my Jonesin big time to try out the Audere in either the Decade or the DJ.
Neither float my boat as much as the 44-07 does.
I just wish I could do the work myself.
I hate dropping either of those basses off to a tech and hoping everything goes smoothly.
I asked this one tech locally about Installing and Audere in a Lakland and he knew nothing about either brand. Not a good sign :(

Uh oh, soon as I saw this I knew you would be wanting to do this again.

Just a thought, but maybe you could contact Lakland and ask them to point you in the direction for a tech in your area?

Or you could just send it all the way to me and back, can't promise a quick turn-around though as I may need to do extensive testing ;)

Yea I just cannot get the sound out of the Decade or DJ that I would want.
They are truly beautiful to look at, and play REALLY well.
But the limited tone control kinda bugs me I guess.
I guess I need more than VVT.

yeah right? ship them from New Yawk to Portland?
and back?
kinda risky.
And also risky in the sense ya might not want to give them back after your "extensive testing" ....LOL :D
OR, they might come black painted black :D :eyebrow:

Nah, I don't roll like that and wouldn't dream of altering gear that was not mine. The worst thing I would do would be to give them a thorough cleaning before sending them back.

I'll admit that when I popped the lid on the 44-07 I was a bit intimidated by cavity of spaghetti & thought for sure I'd be takin this to Lull's shop.
But after taking sum time tracing wires all over the place I found that it was only 4-5 solders & the hole LH3 pulled out in tact.
The Audere super easy to install & am so glad I didn't pay $100 to have it done.

As for a Chi single loaded DJ the JZ3 was freakishly easy, plug & play. Love them singles in Z mode! :bassist:

A classic 4 band in the Geddy DJ did require a battery box, but you already have one in your DJ, so that's half the battle right there! This made a world of difference with the Aero's.

Wonder if Audere would put a JZ3 together that had the stacked knobs with chrome or silver on the bottom of the stack rather than a black?
I saw on their site that it comes with the stacked knob silver on top and black on the bottom. On the sonic blue DJ that black on the bottom would not look so good :(
I gotta admit, this whole "plug and play" stuff has me tempted to TRY to give it whirl myself.....:eek::confused:
