Lakland Owners Group #55!

A few months ago I received my second Lakland. My first, and now gone, was a skyline JO that was nice - but within weeks I was already trading out pups etc. In the end it just did not even come close to my frankenstein jazz in playability or tone. So it was traded off for a 1989 SR5. My first 5. Cool, very cool. But, I could never get used to the spacing. Band loved it though.
Fast forward to an opportunity to trade off some gear for a 55-02 with LH3 system. I simply love this bass. It is literally the very first instrument that upon playing it I have not been tempted to start "upgrading" and modding it. In fact, I am scared to even do anything to it for fear of losing the tone. I have played it in several situations now and just love it. One thing in particular I love is the response from the treble control. I can set it near off and still get a good clear tone just warmer, where most others I have experience with just throw a blanket over my amp in tone comparison. And, when boosted, it does not seem to get overly bright at all - very usable.
For 20 years now I have said I was a die hard Jazz bass player, and would never go far from that point. But, I really believe I have now found the instrument that jives with my style and music genre choices, where before I tried to make something fit the 55-02 just does naturally. That music taste happens to be the jam band seen, Umphrey's and the like.
That is enough from me, I love my 55-02and now need to move my old SR5 off.

Great story! I too have to sing praises about the LH-3 pre w/ LH pups.... they can do it all!!
Bet your Ray has the 3 band pre... I don't like it's sound. The classic 2 band is great though.

Speaking of the saddle height of the DPLEII and other Skys: I compared my Korean 44-02 to my pre 2K 55-94 and the bridge plate thickness seemed the same. BUT the fretboard of the 44-02 is 2-3 mm higher off the body and therefore the saddles were higher. I wouldn't say they were maxed out like Dan's. My 55-94's B and G saddles are nearly all the way down.

stepped in to say my heart is with you,and share some news. Going through an interesting period of personal and professional life, the 55 Dual J fretless AKA Nessie traded for a 55-94 that used to be mine before, Carl's hand wound stompbox LH-3 preamp sold locally, and found very nice 1968 Dynacord Bass-King amp heads that I will probably lean to to replace ampeg inmy gear.

Don't know about the official Lakland presence, last year JP was here in Austin during the SXSW/Austin Guitar Show. This year they did not come.
I really wanted to go to Dallas next week but it is my twins 2-year birthday party...

There's an 8 1/2-month old at home. I do most of my Foruming from my iPhone when I catch a breath at work or on the bus these days. Or, like, late at night right before I go to bed. Uh... Which is what I'm doing right now

I've had this US DJ4 for a couple of years now. I decided to replace the current lakland pups replaced with aeros, so I contacted Larry to get things going. He asked me to measure the string spacing, and now that I've had a good look, I've noticed that the strings don't line up between the pickup pole pieces. The E string sits perfectly between its pole pieces, while the G string is about 3-4mm off-centre, with the A and D strings each being a little off centre, increasing to the G.
I'm aware that the DJ4 has slightly narrower bridge spacing, and that's what's causing the misalignment, and so I'm not too fussed as far as that goes. My problem is that Larry at Aero said that the strings must align with the pickups for good resolution, and that anything other than that will cause problems. So, my question to twofold:
Has anyone with Aeros in the DJ4 had this problem, and was it a problem for the sound? Or even any other pickups? This could be partly why I'm not 100% happy with the lakland pups.
If so, is there any way to adjust it so that the strings 'share' the misalignment better. i.e. shifting something so that the E and G strings are 2mm off, and A and D strings are 1mm off?

just out of curiosity, does the LH-3 preamp have a gain trim inside the cavity?
i remember my LH-3 55-02 was too quiet for my liking and i now own a US 55-69 which is truly a dream bass.
makes me wonder if there was a gain trim inside the cavity, maybe turning it up would have pleased me?
