Back again. Just wanted to drop by and extol the virtues of my 55-01. We had a band retreat this weekend where we grab an Airbnb, go over band business stuff, identify changes to sets/songs/transitions, and break bread. In addition to those items, we also play a lot of music and this was really the first time I used this in particular bass in the band context.
I brought it in addition to my 55-02 (posted above) because we have a few originals that require drop tuning on the B string and I added a Hipshot drop tuner a couple months back. Thought it would be easier than retuning. But my god did it sound really good. Like really, really good! The Aguilar DCBs brought a nice bite and growl to the proceedings. May need to rethink using it more than I have been.
The aforementioned Hipshot double drop tuner.
Very different than Old Glory.

Man! Both of those turned out soo good! The black hardware looks like that’s how it should have been from the beginning. Stock pre or upgrade?
They do look like they should have had black hardware from the start. And the pre is an LH3.
They do but I bought these used off Reverb.
Any idea how to carefully clean the board and retain mojo and shine of this Bg110?

Lakland has a guide on their site that mentions orange oil and paste wax. There’s dozens of wrong avenues to take when trying to buy orange oil on Amazon. I’ve encountered guys that bought aromatherapy and food-grade orange oil which is too acidic and ends up drying the finish out.
I’ve been using Music Nomad F-1 fingerboard cleaner for years. It’s silicone-free as Lakland recommends.
Their usage guide is linked below - I’ve had the best results following their recommendations verbatim, using the microfiber cloths as well.
After cleaning, I back it up with a light application of Howard Feed and Wax - I get the kind that comes in the bottle. You leave it on for about 20 minutes and buff it off with a microfiber cloth. This leaves the neck feeling factory fresh, almost like a pool cue, and smooth as it gets.

Hi folks. I've had a 55-02 for about 3 years, and have grown into loving it as I'm playing more and 'working out' more seriously. My original strings started to sound a bit dead on the high end, so decided to replace with DR Dragon Skins (Nickel). They sound pretty good, but there was a certain something with the sound of the original strings, which I call 'gravitas' - and I think were Lakland strings new from the factory.
Anyone know for sure about this? Wondering if they were stainless or nickel in the new configuration.

I think they come with D'Addario XL strings stock. Nickel-plated steel. Did the strings you took off have different color ball ends?

In the case of DR Dragon Skins, they are a coated string - there’s varying opinions on this, but coated strings can have a more subdued high-end tone that their standard uncoated counterparts. Coated strings have come a long way over the years. The conductivity issues and “condom on the strings” concerns are mostly a thing of the past, but they are not the first choice for those looking for the brightest and clearest tone.
If your term “gravitas” can be translated more recognized terms like “zing” or “piano tone”, than you may be missing that in your current coated string experience. I’d be surprised if a change to uncoated strings doesn’t get you back to the tone you’re looking for.
DR uncoated strings are a good choice, as well as D’Addario nickel or stainless, or GHS Super Steels.

Yes, you are correct, although the "string-zing" is not all that desirable as it gets amplified by the high end PAs that I play through. The low end tone and depth -forgive me, I'm not that good at describing aspects of tone - was just amazing with my original strings. Thanks for your input!

I was told by Lakland that the maple fretboards are finished with 4 layers of cyanoacrylate so there is no need to add oil or wax as it will not absorb into the wood like the Rosewood does. I was inquiring on my USA made Laklands so I don't know if the same method is used on the overseas versions.
