So, I have confirmed this is indeed the exact bass and now have the opportunity to purchase it. I can't tell from the S/N what year it was built. And it's history would indicate that it's been passed around a bit. But I assume that a unique USA Lakland might be worth a closer look?
I missed that original post. I really would not care about the year, but 5BG01 was made in 2009. I would buy it.
And interesting that it was in a Lakland white case as the post here from 2021 had it in a generic black case.
Thanks for the response. And the date info, that is helpful. I did see the black case post. The seller is selling this with the white/cream color Lakland case now, although it may be a 'little rough but all there'. It's also had EMG's installed and there may be an issue with that installation, possible with the wrong EMG pickups. Not 100% sure. I would likely take that back to its original passive form anyway and source some Lakland appropriate pickups, whatever those were assuming I could find something. Or Nordstrands, etc if not. All work I can do but it's just a matter of if I want to. The bass will also need a but of freshening up as I am seeing some rusty screws, saddles, etc.

Help me understand where this fits in things and what makes it somewhat historical in Lakland lore. 'BG' = Bob Glaub, so that's the model, otherwise known as as the 55-64? And if so would this be the first USA 55-64? But the PJ configuration would make it a custom right because a regular 55-64 would be a P only right? I'm not that well versed beyond P shaped PJ models are not that easy to find, USA or Skyline.Don't lean!

So.... This is the very very first US production 5 string P bass Lakland ...at that point they were named GLAUBS not yet 5564s
Well, that is pretty cool. Thank you. And yes the color is great. When I saw it the first time in person, on a beautiful sunny day, it just gleamed all over. Was a very good first impression. But, looking closer at it now, in warts and all mode, more realities come to light and I have thing to weigh. That said, it appears to be a very solid instrument with normal use markings and wear, especially for a 15 YO instrument.
I had number 12, and foolishly sold it. Been trying to find it ever since. It was numbered 5BG12, also a PJ.

Great info! I love the collective sleuthing in sorting this one out. That confirms a couple very important things for me. One is that it was indeedoriginally a P only version originally and that routing I hear about was the J cavity and the battery box. Second, that those are stickers on the fretboard, which is a great disappointment. I had a suspicion but am very relieved to confirm that. Thank you.
I'm actually excited that they are stickers. Didn't care for that abalone look, didn't match the rest of the bass. And I hate stickers on the fretboard. Awesome!
