Lakland Owners Group #69

Well, the old 'knobster' got its first full live workout yesterday and I was very pleased with it's passive/original sound, the added tonal versatility and excellent playability. Funny that I actually find myself actually using that passive tone knob on this one where I never have on any bass before. I had always run wide open and if they weren't even on there I would not have cared. They just seems to be useless and muddied things. But here it's actually a great and very useful tool. It's now become my #1 bass and I would have never thought I'd say that about a simple 'P' style bass. Live and learn I guess, eh?

I really went overboard on this bass.
This was posted on Ebay, no bids. I made the seller an offer and he took it.
The black paint was in bad shape. I knew I was going to have it refinished, so I was fine with it.
I like old Fenders, and I like the look of the long stem tuners. I called Hipshot, and they were able to send me new longer stems that work on the Ultralites.
I knew I wanted a Chisonic. Never REALLY played through a humbucker. We added a push/pull to split the coils
I hated the original pickguard. It was more brown then red. Kevin cut a new one
I had Texan/Clay make me a set of Padauk knobs, then decided it needed a matching thumbrest. He nailed both.
At the last minute I decided I am this far. I am going to have Kevin change the dots to abalone

What a stellar transformation. Well thought out as a complete package. And that strap is just icing. Well done.

And, because I am a bit color challenged and computer screen variations being what they are, what is the actual color?

I have a Hollow 30 and I absolutely love it. So much so that I am having a custom bass made 5string E-C 30" hollowbody with a very similar spec. Mine may go up for sale in a month or so.

Bass strings online has a great selection of short scale strings. I didn't love the black nylon tapes from labella. I have a pretty new used set sitting around. I ended up loving a set of short scale light guage labella deep Talkin flats. They are perfect for the bass.

I had sent the bass back to lakland in Chicago for a slight adjustment and their first response was what strings did you put on the bass it sounds great.

I highly recommend the Hb30 with those strings although when my custom comes I may be looking to get rid of it.

I also notice a difference in the sound with the pickguard removed and currently play it that way.

No I should have asked but I'd assume a US HB30 5 string wouldn't be something they'd do. Especially since I want 24+ frets.

The upper register on the HB30 sings beautifully. It is certainly a combo of the hollow construction and short scale that do it.

I've really got into the chorded melody jazz guitarist type thing since I got this bass and find myself wanting that higher string and upper register.

I don't mind talking about the bass I am having made but figure you guys want to stick to lakland talk!

Quick question. I've owned a 55-02 (not for me) and my incredible DJ5. Basically cementing me in the Lakland world forever. (Hell maybe I'll even try out a 55-02 again). I really enjoy the bass and it records like a dream. Such an amazing natural tone. But just for curiosity's sake, keeping it passive, how do the Aguilar hum canceling Jazz pups compare? Are they much different? Basically, will I NOTICE an upgraded difference in sound tone and feel? any info would help, because Ive been thinking of dropping in a set soon.

I highly recommend Aero pups!!! There is a reason why the original A-Bass DJ signature bass came equipped with Aeros.....and why the Lakland DJ initially came with Aeros. I installed a set of Aeros in my 4494...I've have never received this many compliments on my bass tone in all my bass playing career. Seriously, they are great pups. Well worth the price IMHO.

Edit. my bass is all passive. I yanked the preamp and wired it VVT.

Hm ok cool. Something else to consider. Do those Aeros all come active? I'll be able to wire it, but if there's a passive set to look for I'll go straight for that. And do you know the models specifically?
