Lakland Owners Group #69

I'd reccomend his Type 1 Jazz pups. Only caveat is the they are a true single coil. If you wanted a dual coil pup you'd have to have him make you a pair. Larry is cool guy to talk with. Again, HIGHLY reccomend his pups.

I'll definitely look into them. I'm intrigued.

Anyone have any experience with the Aguilars? Just for curiosity sake. They're readily available to me, so if the reviews are good it'll be easier and faster to get them. (But im not counting out the Aeros)

Quick question. I've owned a 55-02 (not for me) and my incredible DJ5. Basically cementing me in the Lakland world forever. (Hell maybe I'll even try out a 55-02 again). I really enjoy the bass and it records like a dream. Such an amazing natural tone. But just for curiosity's sake, keeping it passive, how do the Aguilar hum canceling Jazz pups compare? Are they much different? Basically, will I NOTICE an upgraded difference in sound tone and feel? any info would help, because Ive been thinking of dropping in a set soon.

That would be a downgrade IMHO from either aeros or hansons. Fralins are another great option in a DJ.

I can also heap praise on the Aero Type 1 pickups. I have them in my JO4 and love them. Larry probably spent 2 hours on the phone with me talking about electronics and all sorts of stuff. Very friendly guy. He basically carried the whole conversation! Really personable.

The Hansons were more low-midrange heft to me, and had a warmer/wooly/vintage attitude. I think they're supposedly similar to the Fralins with an 'old school' feel.

The Aeros sound wide open, and makes my bass (ash/maple) sound very woody and piano-y. Wide, clear, balanced frequencies with deep tight lows and crisp bright highs.

Obviously either pickup could be great, depending on your needs and situation. I don't have any experience with the Aguilars, sorry.

Excellent question... I know they are working on some new pickups

More specifically I was looking at the 44-64 custom on Lakland's site, it says hybrid split coil.
Then if you see the 2015 Skyline page, it says neopunch split coil.
They must've not updated the name from the "new" hybrid split coil to neopunch perhaps?

Look into the Chisonic Jazz drop ins. I put a set in my passive JO and it was vintage warm, but aggressive when you dug into it. I kick myself for selling that bass. You could nail a P sound with it, perfect slap tone, and Jaco and Geddy as well.

They make a jazz sized single could drop in for the 5, CSJ5 I think is the model number. I had the 4 string jazz drop ins. They were a perfect fit. I'm sure the 5s will be as well. Get in touch with Bo at Lakland/Hanson.

Will do. Like, asap. Thanks man. I always loved those Chisonics but I always thought they needed some sort of routing to fit. And the prices on them aren't too bad either. If I can pop them right in, then that's where I'm going.

Heyyy you guys!! hope all is well with all of you. its been a long time since i posted. But since I'm getting that 55-60 LE in mary kay white thats in the classifieds, I figured it would be a good time to drop in. The guy only lives 20 minutes from me, and I bought the fretless Ray35 from him last week. While i was there I played the 55-60, and its been haunting me all week. So today I offered him my Geddy+ a little dough, and he said lets do it:) I bought the Geddy as a back up for my US JO-CS, and didn't end up using it much as my band is on Hiatus. Plus Some of you know how I love my Laklands :bassist: anyhow, it will be getting the neck sanded and a tung oil finish (I just prefer that over the satin) and a new plate with the volume and tone concentric knobs, its just what I'm used to and prefer. eventually, a matching headstock. At least thats the plan for now….

John, First off, that's one really sweet bass, I'd love hear how that sounds, Ive been really curious about that setup since that guy with the US sherwood green BG-CS posted his a while ago.

It also looks like you have the P version of Markus's JO-CS

Picked up this beauty today!!!
Kevin Caton really outdid himself on this one.
The color is perfect!! The pickguard he cut is perfect!!
I could not be happier.

I really went overboard on this bass.
This was posted on Ebay, no bids. I made the seller an offer and he took it.
The black paint was in bad shape. I knew I was going to have it refinished, so I was fine with it.
I like old Fenders, and I like the look of the long stem tuners. I called Hipshot, and they were able to send me new longer stems that work on the Ultralites.
I knew I wanted a Chisonic. Never REALLY played through a humbucker. We added a push/pull to split the coils
I hated the original pickguard. It was more brown then red. Kevin cut a new one
I had Texan/Clay make me a set of Padauk knobs, then decided it needed a matching thumbrest. He nailed both.
At the last minute I decided I am this far. I am going to have Kevin change the dots to abalone
