2008 was the start of the pickup change if I am remembering correctly. Not sure about the DD. As Jedi bass said you can still get something similar but the switchover from using signature artists to the numbering system was when Dan sold the company which I think was 2010.

I always love when I see big name artists using Skyline instruments. George Porter Jr used a first year Korean Skyling for awhile before getting his USA bass.

Who would be interested in committing to buy a Skyline Scheff w/ ebony dotted fretboard, black paint on ash with matching black headstock, all chrome hardware, LH preamp. I have ideas for some truly awesome custom pickguards that we could get made afterwards, should we want.

Anyways, I've put the bug in John's ear and he said he would look into it.

The "committing to buy" part is an assumption since we did that to get the LOG bass built years ago. I really don't feel Lakland would have any problems selling a short run of all black Scheffs. Us guys that have had them know they are pure magic!

Pro Skyline users are all over the Lākland Facebook page. I remember Finger 11's bassist playing a gray Skyline 55-02 years ago. He also had a US JO5 that he played for about half of the time, alternating with the 02. I was disappointed when I talked with him and found out he wasn't a Lakland nerd like me. He didn't even know they were 35" scale LOL. He was just a pro player that picked one up and preferred how it felt and played, over his EBMM 5ers, and bought 2 of them.

Scheffs are killer and I would love to get one but there are two obstacles. 1. As cool as they are they never sold well to begin with (there is a reason they discontinued them) and 2. You need to get enough people on board with the specific specs you want. It was one of the hardest parts of the LOG bass. I would be interested but I don't like matching headstocks and wouldn't want an ebony board.

That said I wish you luck because if you get people on board and it does well it might encourage another future run.

Jerry Scheff is my idol and I think if your going to make a Jerry Scheff signature bass it should be an Exact Replica of the main bass the man played. I never did figure out the Lakland Jerry scheff bass not being remotely close to his bass and no signature on it as well. that's the reason i would never own one.

I actually prefer a signature bass to be something that the artist designed vs just another replica of a Fender. If you want a Precision bass like he had there are tons of those you can get. As far as actual signatures, Lakland did that on the first run of Joe Osborn basses only. After that none of the signature basses had them.

Not sure what year it was but a friend of mine knew Jerry Scheff was my idol and asked if I wanted to go to a lakland party for 20 people only. I didn't want to go but my friend talked me into it. I got there and my Jaw dropped. He said surprise. There was my idol Jerry Scheff. Not only him. Donald Duck dunn, Bob gloub, Joe Osbourne and Daryl Jones from the Rolling stones were also there. We got to talk with them for 3 hours one on one. It was the10th anniversary of Lakland. One of the highlights of my life. Theses are some pictures we took. Never before relesed.

Sounds good to me. I like that combo of options. I like ebony boards.

One bad review, early on, killed the Scheff, despite the fact that almost everyone who's owned one has loved them. And, that includes the Bass Whisperer Ed Friedland.

Jerry's first Scheff was chambered with a special Bart pre that can't be purchased now. If you want to pay $4500 or more for a replica, have them attempt it with a US bass. I don't care about signature basses, and couldn't tell you much about Jerry or his career.

I want the sound I had with my red Scheff, and the feel and playability that Laklands are known for. And, the sound IMO/IME is mostly attributed to pickups and location w/ body wood being the next most significant factor, followed by preamp choice. I do not like the look of laurel or satin finished maple, and I think rosewood is still not an option. If people can't agree on black with ebony, it's their loss. I'll have that Scheff sound if I have to build it myself or have Carl build me one. I'm just trying to help y'all out. No skin off my back and no... I won't start the process of trying to please everyone with options that aren't attainable. That LOG bass mess was a nightmare and soured the whole experience for many of us!

I take it that "wouldn't" is a typo or you wouldn't bother asking if we're interested?

Anyways, as per our PM- a used 44-02, a couple lipsticks and fun with a router. Cost: $130 for pickups; some bondo; a pint of automotive paint and one set of cojones. ;) I doubt I'd find a Scheff as light as my 44-02.

Typo yes LOL. I fixed it. Yeah, I'd use a pickguard to cover the holes if I mod'd a 44-02. But, that's an easy alternative.
