Lakland Owners Group #69

Well she made her way safely up from Nashville. Picked it up on my way to a wedding gig and I’m trying to decide if I dive in and use it tonight. She used to be a LOG but the neck was replaced years ago with a maple dot. I obviously need to remove the faux inlays yet but I couldn’t resist taking a picture with the exposed bricks.

She sounds great acoustically though and plays very easy. we’ll see if she sees any airtime tonight.

TL;DR: I may have found my 5'er in the 55-02.

I've had my eye on the 55-02 for a few months now - it sounded like it's very versatile and the low B gets good feedback but no one carries it locally so I couldn't try it out. I was concerned about the 35" scale and after reading all the posts about 34 vs 35 on TB I came to the conclusion that the definitive answer on that question is 'it depends' and some people like it and some don't. My main bass is a Fender Marcus Miller JB 4-string and the 5'ers in that model are hard to find and pricey so in my 5-string quest I picked up a Sire V7 a few months back. I like it but don't love it and the GC 180-day return window is closing soon - so I decided to try my luck with a blemished 55-02 also from GC. When I put it in my cart, the description included something like 'Used Grade2' so I didn't know what to expect. After surprisingly quick delivery from GC the 55-02 arrived on Saturday (ordered on Wednesday) - I'm not sure what the 'blemish' is on this as it looks perfect to me (any apparent marks in the pictures are glare - I can't find a scratch or mark anywhere). I'm playing it through a Genzler MG800/Bass Array 12-3 and GB Uber 210. I'm trying to be objective and not let the 'newness' cloud my judgement but so far it just feels and sounds better to me than the Sire - and the B is definitely better than the Sire and my L2500 Tribute. I'm not one for playing around with bass innards but I may try to tweak the midrange frequency but that's my only possible question so far - this bass has jumped ahead of the pack.
