Lakland Owners Group #69

New black creme black pickguard from WD Music Products on the DJ5. Very satisfied with the product. Took a bit of shaping to fit, but turned out great. I added a few subtle shape changes from the stock one. Yes, I’m a little obsessed with this bass :-D

Nice! I too have ordered from WD. Was very pleased as well. Your bass looks really good.

I’m thinking of changing all my hardware on my 55-02 from chrome to black. Where can I find a black Lakland bridge?

They don’t sell black bridges. I’ve done it twice. I sent bridges to Hipshot and they powder coated black for me for about $75. However, the last time I checkedu, Hipshot said they don’t provide that service anymore. However, there are many other companies that can. I only chose Hipshot because they actually make the Lakland bridge.

Hi everyone,

Just put an order in for a Skyline 55-02 Deluxe Honeyburst - can't wait to get it! Love my fretless Fender Jazz Am Pro with Chromes but I've been gassing for a Lakland for awhile and to explore more tones and different feel. I typically like to play flats light gauge 40-95 on my J, what do you guys use and/or recommend on the 55-02 that will fit through body? I'll also be looking at a good hardshell case - any suggestions? I'm in Canada!

Oh, can I get a number? :)

Congrats!!

I made a recent change: Flats on everything, after 30 years of steel roundwounds. I have 10 or 11 different flat sets on as many 34” 4 string basses, and some work as string-thru. I’ll let you know which ones work and have the extra inch you’ll need for the 35” scale.

Honeyburst 55-02 with flats is a good combo - see profile pic for details ;)
I´m using D´Addario chrome flats, but I´m not so satisfied. Tone is good, nice and bright (for flats), but not much sustain. Will have to experiment.

Peace, SoundSupport

Chromes are also super high tension IME....hard on the fingers if you like to dig in or bend much.....if you can stomach the price, try TI flats. They are by far my favourites.....very warm but well-defined, the lowest tension flats out there (I think) ...pricey but last a looooong time.

Okay... here’s what I’ve tried THRU BODY so far on my 34” 4 string basses:

20-ish year old set of GHS 105-45
TI JF344 Jazz Flats 100-43
DR Legends 105-45
Dunlop 100-40
Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats 95-45
LaBella DTF 109-49

NONE have enough E string past the nut to work on a 35” scale. I think TI and LaBella offer longer strings. Just make sure the LaBella sets are the ones made specifically for thru body. They say it on the front and mine have a “-TB” in the name of the set.

Yes! I only use high tension or 105-45 flatwound sets on my basses that I leave drop tuned. My 3 favorite EADG tuned sets are TI Jazz 100-43, LaBella Low Tension 100-42, EB Cobalts 95-40, and Dunlop 100-40. TIs are my favorite. The LaBellas sound like they have foam under them until I plug in, then they sound marvelous! The Cobalts don’t sound like flats at all, very bright! And, the Dunlops are very non-flat sounding as well.

Wow thanks guys! that's really interesting and useful - what a great welcome! Without trying to open a can of worms, do many of you just go bridge set up to access string options or just prefer through body on the Lakland?

Cheers!

Compromising the string integrity if its not designed for the sharper bend when going thru body is worse than any tone change from bridge mounting. I like DR Legends through bridge for flats.

Hello,
I own a Lakland Skyline Lined Fretless 55-02. I was considering upgrading to a Lakland 55-94 lined fretless. Will I really notice a discernible difference between the two instruments. I own a fretted Lakland 55-94
My Skyline has a bone nut as I had it replaced. Granted the pickups are different on my 55-94 since they are Bartolini's, but to my ears, while there is a difference, it's not huge. Granted others will disagree. Just
interested in what folks think.
