Start with a John East UNI PRE 5 knob. Highly configurable for individual pup gain in active mode. Selectable EQ points for bass and treble. Mid is sweepable, which is key for me that will just increase the 44-02’s versatility. 18 volts for a little extra headroom and extend battery life. Just natural finish on standard body, no deluxe top and maple fretboard. Anticipate this being ultimate player for me. My extra special 44-01 and other basses are going to be collecting dust.

Ummmm... there's no need for the 44-01 to gather dust as long as I'm alive and gigging! I would gladly put that bass in rotation with my top players. So, let me know and I'll start saving my pennies.

Some 55-02 recording work today.

Every time I feel that this bass is losing its mojo a little, I twist a knob or flip the switch and there it is again. Currently really enjoying the "P bass" setting (neck pickup only).

Also tried out the DR Steel Lo-Riders on this bass, and I love the results. Zingy and defined, and they allow me to go really low and clanky on the action.

Out of curiosity, I priced out a Lakland 55-94 with the same build, finish, and neck as the one I purchased in 2000.
23 years later I wouldn’t have been able to buy the bass I own. It’s @ $5,000.00

And that’s correct especially when you consider a 55-02 is over 2k now. And import (garbage- based on reviews) from the big F is also 1700 plus, depending on the line and number of strings.

I saw yesterday where a new Ric was priced at $3,800 and change. Wasn’t it yesterday that they were 2k?

The band I'm in just released another single today. This was an unusual recording for us as it was all done remote and didn't include the full band. Jake (vocals, acoustic) and Ash (fiddle, keys) recorded the brunt of the song and then asked me to add some bass to it.

They sent me the file and my signal chain was:

Cherryburst 55-94 w/Barts and Lakland medium steels => OVNIFX Smoothie compressor => Noble DI => Focusrite Clarett 4Pre => Logic Pro

This is such an understated song, I kept having to go back and re-record my part, removing more and more of what I was doing to keep my parts simple and out of the way. It turned out pretty dang good if I do say so myself.

While we have ~12 songs recorded (at this point), Jake, my BL, is choosing to only release singles over the course of 2023 rather than packaging them into a full album. A sign of the current attention deficit state of modern music consumption.

Not going to mention any names,but offered to bring nice 2021 44-02 Lakland Skyline Cherry burst satin finish,with roasted neck,to the Rod Run in Pigeon Forge past weekend,but didn't happen. Probably just as well didn't have room to bring it in the 37 Ford we brought down.
