Larry Hartke's 2010 Precision Bass Refinish

Jbassbob,

"What are you nuts" is fine and maybe even called for, but the rest...

How is it that you decide that my bass is doing no good where it is and that I should give it away? I like it, it's mine.

If a were to put a Jethro Tull sticker on my bass do I then also have to give it away? This makes no sense and shows some kind of repressed hostility...uh oh...now the bass playing psychiatrists will be on my back for practicing without a license.

But what's any of that got to do with the price of Bananas?

Larry,

I love it, but probably not for the reasons everyone else loves/hates it.

The P-bass is never my first choice, nor is it an instrument I am really all that fond of, for the most part. I own one because I know that I do need one every now and then. And I really do like the way it sounds.. For a P-Bass. I hate my P-Bass, but I don't know how I'd get by without it.

Therefore, I see the Precision Bass as a necessary evil. And some sick part of me rejoices when I see one that was set on fire. :D

This thread has given me Ideas. I now really feel like burning a bass (not destroy it mind you) If I come across a cheap fender,,I might just strip the paint with a blowtorch,,or maybe blowtorch my '83 fender elite to take off a few pounds (it's kinda heavy).

Hey Troy,
Actually I am going to torch one, a yellow one, yellow comes out real striking! Already torched a yellow guitar, very nice! But why does it take money to scorch my Fender bass? I'm not throwing it in the garbage can, it's a great playing bass set up to perfection.

Spinal Tapper
Don't fear the reaper...I'm not going to torch the '59! I already got an offer to display my torched basses in an art gallery in New York...so there will be more to come when I get around to it.

I read the top quote "more to come" and it hit a nerve I suppose. I don't have a job and I see schools without funds and music programs shutting down. I'm sorry if I sounded hostile, wasn't intentional, just trying to make a point.

Brother Bob,

No problem I was just kidding, this is not serious stuff. But whatever basses I burn will not become garbage or unusable...far from it...especially if I were to take a poll from this thread.

I'm not destroying, I'm creating, and so far (by a pretty big margin) people like it.

You will be happy to know that we do help out school programs...but they can't have my bass!

I guess this means you won't be sending me your bass for re-finishing any time soon!

All the very best!

Hey Larry..they said I was crazy for using my "Webber art Bass Maker"..years ago.It seems that we have some points in common.Makers Mark usually helps with my creations.;)

Cheers.

Now be fair, someone said to go grill your bass and they meant this one -

I'm not sure Larry. I generally think of art as being a product of talent and study. Picasso could paint stick figures and they were raved about, but only because he had created this entire body of work and people could see the "idea" behind the simplicity.

If you had designed and built some amazing basses and suddenly had a vision of what a fire-blackened finish would mean as a statement of something (what? the impermanence of being... I dunno... :)), then I might be willing to call it art.

Try looking at it this way: a broken buggy wheel laying against nicely aged barn wood looks very cool. If I'm Ansel Adams and take a pic -- it's art. If I'm Joe Shlabotnik's kid visiting Amish country and I take one -- it's a snapshot. Might be a heck of a good snapshot... but I have not really earned the right to be considered an "artist" as a photographer.

You created something that looks... interesting... is definitely controversial (most of us couldn't afford to by a new P and just decide to fry it), will probably bring you money if you decide to sell it (or auction it or whatever)...

...but I don't think it's art.

Last time I checked, if you buy something you can do with it as you please as long as it doesn't harm another person. If you don't like it, fine, but don't attack it because there are probably numerous things that one does that leave most people baffled. Personally, its not in my taste, I like the other refinish he's doing much better:smug:, but its HIS bass so he can do what HE pleases with it. BTW Art is purely subjective, but that's another argument for another day...

Keep doing what you do Larry!

No offense, but who are you to say what art is and what art is not?
