Las Vegas Shooting

I'm trying to dump my Janet Jackson tickets as we speak. It's been over 20 years since I've been to a concert and now with all of this insane madness going on I think I'm done with large crowds.
While I fully understand and sympathise with this, and in absolutely no way mean to belittle your concern, I can't help but hate the idea that so many people are letting fear of such an event dictate their social lives.
I've no idea if this was a terrorist attack, but that's the result these people want...to cripple their enemies with fear.
I refuse to be cowed into refusing to attend a concert, walk down a beachside promenade, run a marathon, cross London Bridge, take a subway, etc.
We've all gotta go sometime, and I'll be damned if I live the rest of my life in fear of some depraved lunatic with a gun or a truck or a bomb.
I saw enough of that crap in northern Ireland. Decent people finally made it clear they'd had enough and now there's peace.

Just heard on the news It's more like 50 dead and many more injured. Horrific. Looks like a homegrown terror act.

I have a colleague down there this weekend for this show. Haven't heard any news yet...hope he and his buddies are OK.

Friendly reminder that while this is a tragedy that affects us all, I'd like to remind everyone of TalkBass's policy about guns

From here:

After seeing nearly every pro/anti gun thread devolve into endless arguments, we have decided to no longer allow threads on guns here. Much like politics, these threads tend to only breed contention amongst the membership even if the initial intention of a thread was good. As these topics are not at all essential to a bass forum, we feel it is better to disallow them, as our goal is to bring a community together rather than push it apart. To be fair to both sides, all topics on guns/gun control are no longer permitted, including pro or anti control or ownership, NRA, "show your guns," etc.

I know. This attack was carried out with an automatic weapon, but do not let this thread turn into a discussion about that. Just like we won't let it turn into a religious or political argument if the attacker's motive stems from that.

I'm going to turn on the news now to get the latest.

I live 20 minutes away from the Strip; thank goodness we were not working there this Sunday.
This was done either by a Terrorist or a demented individual; I understand the shooter was killed as well, so time will tell.

I am sorry to say, that with the incidents around the World- I figured sadly it was only a matter of time before Las Vegas became a target.
Millions of Tourists, Visitors, and locals alike, in any number of venues and areas both Downtown and on the Strip, even in the 'burbs where we live.
Striking terror here could have a profound effect on the economy, and make Visitors and locals alike afraid of more of the same happening.

Kudos to the First-Responders and Law enforcement for hopefully ending this siege. The Las Vegas Metro Police are tough; they take no BS from anyone, and keep a tight lid and control on a "Party Town". I'm glad they do what they do.

I was shocked and saddened to hear this- This is where I live.

There are investigations and steps that can be taken to prevent terrorist attacks; unfortunately, not much can be done
in identifying and preventing maniacal deadly outbursts from the sort of individual who apparently was respondible for this murder, the worst in US History. So sad.
Maybe internet postings or work history foreshadowed this; time will tell, but its all too late.

A dangerous society we live in. But at the same time, We (Mankind) are STRONG. And the decent, loving, and forthright side of Mankind will always prevail, despite such horrific acts by sad, angry, and lost individuals and groups.

No doubt the toll will rise, It's almost too much to absorb when its in one's backyard.

Dang. No speculation as to motive, but there is one thing was can know.

This was well planned. According to authorities, he never got to use most of what he brought. Geeeeeez.

He waited until the headliner was on. He waited until the crowd was the largest of the entire event. He waited until after dark. He chose an event that was completely blocked by the building on two sides. Another side was blocked by the stage. So, in essence, there was one way out. He did it from far enough away that he knew the sound of the gun, if heard at all, would not draw immediate attention from the crowd. So, for probably half a minute or more he was able to rain down on those people and they had no idea what was happening. He was there since Thursday and watched the scene below at the music festival the two previous nights....likely watching the crowd through a scope the whole time (pure speculation on my part).

Mentally ill? Who knows? Cold and calculated? Most definitely.

By all accounts, the response from law enforcement was swift. The fact that this could have been ten times worse in a matter of a couple of minutes is even more sickening.

:crying:

I'm with @Bob Clayton on this one. If there is anything we can agree on completely it is that this guy sucked and this is sad. Everything else is for another place and time. Thank you for the call to civility.

Why is it that the UK news organizations had the better reporting at the early stages? The BBC and the Telegraph had the name and the picture before our own media had anything. Perhaps it was just a coincidence based on the time I woke up, but this isn't the first time I've noticed this. I follow several different news sources pretty evenly, so I don't think it's the number of "clicks" I've given when online. Although I suppose it could be just that simple.
