Las Vegas Shooting

27 of the victims that died were from SoCal. That brings it home for me. May all the victim's souls RIP. With that said, I am speculating that the shooter had a serious gambling problem and has lost a substantial part of his life savings over the past few years. He blamed the casinos instead of himself. Perhaps his idea of revenge was to soil the gaming capitol of the world economically by doing maximum damage to the city. I guess time will tell.

CNN is saying the guy had 50 lbs of explosives and 1600 rounds of ammo in his car. That suggests he might have expected to get out of the hotel room alive and do more damage.
or maybe he noticed a porter looking at him funny as he was shifting bag after bag of guns and ammo up to his room and decided he didn't really need the last of it.

This seems like a decent case for collecting metadata. As long as everything is encrypted until warranted, we might learn things, like, for one, motive after the fact when nothing is obvious. Say we have all the data somewhere. This guy is clearly guilty. Deannonymize his data and try to connect some dots. I'm very torn on metadata issues in general, because you're sucking up the whole river because you want a couple specific drops, but, hey, could work in this case.

Rigorous, I live in Henderson; we play right now about 90% Corporate, but may resume doing shows for Boyd Gaming & Station Casinos over the Holidays- (I much prefer Corporate gigs; they pay better and are less draining!:roflmao:)

We've also performed at Mandalay, very classy place.

The first early report I heard mentioned (2) dead, at that point I thought that the incident was a "one-on-one" type altercation or something of that sort, but as the situation became clear, and the toll started to rise and rise...
You know the feeling. I just found out a friend of ours was there, she had left early, before the shooting started, thank goodness. I also know someone who along with about 50 others, had to hide in a large cooler/refrigerator backstge until they figured out what had happened.
I mentioned earlier that I had always felt it would only be a matter of time before someone chose the Strip as a target to act out whatever agenda of destruction they may want to carry out- Crowded with people, high-profile, and a mecca for the media-IF someone wishes to strike right at the heart of what good recreation and fun in America is about; this is the place.
We rarely work Sundays, although we have in the past. I'm thankful that fate didn't put us near the Strip that day.

Again, high-praise to the First-responders; Metro in particular was an incredible force in keeping the pandemonium from getting worse, as were random motorists who loaded their vehicles with victims and rushed them to the Hospital before
EMT's could arrive. Truly inspiring, and a great show of what "Vegas Strong!" is about.

I'm a relative newbie here, but Vegas is my home now, and I'm proud to be a part of what this City stands for and provides.
I live in Henderson too and work for Station Casinos as well! Regularly at Red Rock and Santa Fe Station....Small world!
Yeah I thought exactly the same thing when I first saw that there were 2 deaths. But as the night went on, my soul ached harder! I definately have a new respect for all the first responders . This one hit me pretty hard and will probably feel grief for a long while. I drove by Mandalay Bay on my way to a rehearsal earlier today. I just still can't believe it. But as you mentioned, I've always felt that it was a matter of time unfortunately... I've always been alert and looked over my shoulder just to try to be more aware. But you can never prepare for the horror that took place. Be safe out there and let's always look out for each other...!!

It appears now that he had been planning something like this for awhile, He looked into events and hotels in Boston and Chicago and even had a room above a previous event in Vegas. They also think he was trying to explode fuel tanks across the street at McCarron airport. It sounds like this was all premeditated for god only knows what reason for a good while before he acted

The shooter apparently bought a nice house for $400K. In cash. The house is in some kind of community (seniors?) with a homeowners association. It’s on a kind of elevated bluff with no back neighbor. He put up a privacy fence around the house in violation of HOA rules, and was forced to remove the fence. His justification for the fence was he didn’t want to see anyone and he didn’t want anyone to see him.

I keep reading that this was "the worst mass shooting in modern US history", which seems to imply that there was an even worse mass shooting in pre-modern US history. Anyone know what that was? And when did we become "modern"?

I've seen Wounded Knee mentioned several times this week in reference to that. Not sure if that's accurate, though.

It is most definitely Wounded Knee. As far as what constitutes "modern," my guess would be post-WWII but I thought most people considered the end of the 19th century to be "modern." I don't think there are set years unless you are speaking about the "modern era" which ended with the 18th century. Mind you, I am not a history buff...
