Les Claypool/Primus...........were is the love?

To be honest, I can't stand Primus either and never understood why so many people think Claypool is some kind of bass playing genius. I have never seen him do anything special or unique. I don't criticize people who do like his playing. Everyone has different tastes in music. Primus just doesn't do anything for me.

Tommy The Cat pretty much drop the jaw of a lot of people when MTV still played music video ... no one ever saw someone slap on a 6 strings fretless bass

I started out not liking Primus, then I liked them for a few records, and now I am not that into it anymore.
saw them play several times in late 80's / early 90's, and it was a good time.

Saw them again a few years ago, and it was fun, but just something just doesn't jive with me.
I like the playing, but his singing is not for me.

And yes, that Willy Wonka album is pretty bad. I bought it on the vinyl the day it came out, and now I am trying to sell it on discogs.

A YT-like comment would be "he didn't pass the Metallica audition, he can't be that good". I used to listen to Frizzle Fry and Sailing the Seas of Cheese all the time. They're absolutely brilliant albums in their context. That was a long time ago. A funny more recent song I like is, "Lee Van Cleef". It's hilarious and has a cool groove.

Tool's not my thing but I've seen them twice. They're obviously very good at what they do. Like Rammstein, I often don't like the lyrics, even if the song is cool. Example: "Ænema"

Primus sucks! Primus sucks!

They put on a great show this past summer at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto.

Not many bands can pull off a set of their own and then a Willy Wonka themed set (which was basically the entire movie truncated into an hour).

Oompa Loompa....dompity doo!

I've caught Primus about 5 or 6 times in my life so far. Every time they come around......I will see them.

Les is a great show person. And I always love when he disappears and comes back in a pigs mask!

Odd tid bit......at show in 1998 (when Incubus opened for them) at the Warehouse / Kool Haus in Toronto, one of the fans threw a dead fish on stage.
How in the heck do you get something like that past security? I'm still amazed at that to this day.

Mer De Noms is much more solid album among fans. I really dig Thirteenth Step.

They released a very cool cover album called eMotive that has some great tunes on it. Their rendition of Imagine is amazing.
Not sure they'll ever get back together and made another album again.
They were basically Maynard's side project while Tool was in the process of releasing another album (which always meant a lawsuit from their record label)
Tool is one of those very lucky bands to have built their name from word of mouth mostly and they own their rights to their music......which is why they have the lawsuits.

One of the members of Tool is sick right now. And from what I understand, it isn't good.
No one know which member at this point either, but this is likely the delay for their next album.

Maybe someone should discuss the Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel? I've seen Les with the Flying Frog Brigade once. That was amazing!

Primus (including Les and company) is super unique and an important band, I have all the albums (bought my first at 15 years old), I love their vibe and many of the songs - but Les is not the world's best bass player, and not all the tunes are that inspired. Some albums are much more consistent than others I think (Brown Album is aging quite well for some reason to my ears...). I saw them last month live, it was pretty OK as far as the performance went, but it wasn't a "wow" moment for me (and the Wonka album sucks so bad...). Tons of nostalgic guys there in tank tops and Dickies shorts thought otherwise it seemed...

Now, Tim Alexander with any band is pretty killer; his track off Mer De Noms was fantastic, and all his Attention Deficit work with Michael Manring is superb.

I really like Primus, and Clapool's other endeavors, although I confess I have to be in the mood for it. He truly has his own sound, both as a bass player and a songwriter. Very original, but not for everyone.

Where did you hear this? I like Primus, but I'm a big fan of Tool. That would suck. Their show on Halloween looked great on the inter webs, and that says a lot!
