My current Musicman collection is the opposite of yours - two Stingrays and one Big Al. Well, CURRENTLY the opposite of yours. I have a deep love of Stingrays but, having just gotten the Big Al and had an opportunity to play it live, I'm developing a desire for another Musicman. Maybe a Bongo?
When I get home from work tonight I'll post a family picture.
Unfortunately I got home from work way too late to feel like setting up lighting and breaking out my good camera to do "photography", so I just took a cell phone picture. It's hard enough to capture the coloring of the bursts when I do take the time to do that, but it's even harder to make them look good with just a phone camera. And the fretboard on the Special looks filthy even though it's pristine.
Anyway, from top to bottom, here's my current Musicman collection ...
- 2019 Stingray Special 5 HH in Vintage Tobacco Burst and roasted maple fretboard. The Specials are well named, as the changes from previous Stingrays make them even better basses - lightweight, a warmer tone than recent models, and the headroom/authority of an 18V preamp.
- 2011 Big Al 5 SSS in Candy Apple Red and maple fretboard. This is my most recent acquisition, being only 10 days old, but I've already gigged it once and was just blown away by the deep, rich tone - and I only played it in passive mode for those four hours/sets and haven't really gotten to the preamp yet. My Stingrays have been the co-captains of my bass collection (I also have a few other non-Musicman basses) since I got the Special, but I think this one may join their ranks and become tri-captains.
- 2007 Stingray 5 HH in the gorgeous but now discontinued Honeyburst. This is one of the last SR5's that had the preamp and the ceramic pickups of the Sterling 5, so it's kind of a Sterling in a Stingray's body. By 2008, Musicman had finally created 5-string Stingray (alnico) pickups and put them and the Stingray preamp in the five string models. Call this one what you want and debate whether or not those electronics mean that it's not really a Stingray, I don't care.
It's still a fantastic sounding bass and, until I got the Special above, it was my CLEAR #1 bass.

RondoMusic Hadean violin/Hofner style 21" scale bass uke that I had Eric's Guitar replace the floating piezo bridge with a fully adjustable metal bridge that has a piezo pickup in each saddle, Kala/Galli flatwound nylon core strings, painted by Pat Wilkins.

What no ebony ones? I had an ebony Ripper I bought new in '77.
Here's my modest sorta same collection. I guess I've been going for variety rather than similar over the years.

Thanks. It’s wearing black now. And I do have the tone control option, so a little more of a traditional setup.
