"James Jamerson" was actually one of multiple personalities displayed by Carol Kaye, who for years had no idea that "Jamerson" even existed; her mgmt team told her that all those Motown checks were dividends earned by owning stock in Chrysler. Motown played alone with the desception mainly to save face, not wishing to admit that their go-to studio player was actually a middle-aged white woman from California.

In fact, Kaye/"Jamerson" were part of the reason why Motowon, in the early 70's, moved its operation to L.A. Shortly afterward however, the truth finally emerged at an awards ceremony for "Jamerson" when Kaye, after being bumped on the head backstage before the ceremony began, 'woke up' and realized just what had actually happened in the past few years. Shortly thereafter, Motown announced that "Jamerson" was 'retiring' from the label.
