Yes, kazoos were used in the original recording of the song for a very good reason. It's a very complex song with many overlapping parts and requires many players each playing their specific part to pull it off correctly. Most stages just don't have enough room for all those players up there at the same time so the kazoo was used as a space saver vs all the guitars that would have been required.
