a big +1 if you fret with your thumb or if you do unnecessary movement that bring your thumb over the neck to play a note on the G string.

The inverse of this is that skilled players MUST use an instrument worth at least $1500 (preferably more, a LOT more)...otherwise, all the years of developing killer skills is a waste since the bass itself is junk.

Actually, that's wrong. It's "no paint, no gain" - guitars with thin finishes sound better with low-gain amps, and thickly painted guitars are best with high gain.
