Actually the problem was that they were using Gibson guitars for testing, as, early in the piece, the strings would over tune themselves which, owing to the additional string pressure, was causing the headstocks to break. Because of the subsequent decline in Gibson stock as a result of these unfortunate breakages, Gibson sued them to cancel, and D'addario couldn't afford to fight it.D'addario cancelled development of self tuning string sets, for drop-tunings weren't possible without changing strings.
This is the reason why manufacturers often use a combination of woods. Maple, rosewood and swamp ash make a great combination.The sonic properties of wood vary dramatically between species, weight and density. Generally speaking, heavier woods sustain well and have a bright and articulate sound, which are all good attributes for a bass guitar. Extra light weight woods, while a great complement for a bad back, can sound indistinct or muddy especially with humbucking pickups. Medium weight woods fall in the middle and are the traditional preference. Compromises may be found by chambering or hollowing the heavier woods. These bodies remain stiff but light weight for that fat, rich tone with great sustain.
