likes/posts ratio

I strongly feel that there should be a "Dislike" option offered, and that it should be statistically consolidated with the "Likes" received.
Has this been done before?

They have discussed the "dislike" button before. I have said it before and I will say it again, that is an absolutely horrible idea. TB is already swimming in negativity. By clicking "dislike" you can spread hate without having to actually back up or stand by your hate. We are here for healthy discussion so we should foster it. Sadly, some people have the time for internet grudges so people would go around simply disliking every post certain members make. Additionally, some members are extremely sensitive and take the internet very seriously. By showing that other members dislike them isn't going to create a welcoming community.

If they did add a dislike button, it should be like youtube. You can downvote whatever you want but it doesn't do anything except the curmudgeon in you feel better for crapping on something.

Spread love.

I don't understand the logic behind OT posts being somehow...'less valuable'.
Seems to me the What I Learned Today, or What Kind Of Beer I'm Drinking, or What Model Of B-17 I Think Is The Coolest should be just about as 'worthy' as my next play on the Music Match,or Song Uno, or I Hate __________So Much, or (gawd forbid) Which _______ is best for Metal/Bro Country/Sunday Morning Jazz/My New Brittany Spears Tribute Project thread.

Just sayin'...

In the case of the music match, for myself, I give likes for folks that pull something out that, to me is unexpected and gives me something to listen to that I might not otherwise have tried or perhaps posted a blast from the past that isn't normally brought up. The B17 thread ( which is fantastic ) is more of a niche' thread. Not everyone finds aviation as cool as some of us. The "likes" might not come in bunches there, but they come more freely because of the "niche" audience. Playing to the crowd, so to speak. I'm a sucker for wit and humor. Also slap stick forum comedy. I don't get as much exposure to the deep thinkers on TB:OT as I have in the past, I really enjoy the folks that make me think, even the ones I disagree with. Mad Matticus was always an excellent poster in that way. I miss reading his stuff.

I've been on a few forums with "down votes" or dislikes. It's a mixed bag for sure. As with here, you can get a sense of a persons usual leanings fairly quickly given enough subject matter of theirs. So, in that light the dislikes makes sense when you see them from certain folks. I've personally found the use of the emoticons satisfactorily handle what I couldn't ( or wouldn't ) be able to type tactfully. In the end I think that is my personal preferred system.

This is worth repeating. We lost a lot of people in the purge but we were losing great people before that due to the switch and after due to the lack of traffic. I used to hang out in OT all the time but I barely pop in there now. Don't get me wrong, there is still a lot of great members left but there is only a small number of TBers who hang out there anymore. I can even think of a couple people who I disagreed with often that I miss since they got banned (San Diego Harry jumps to mind since he was recent and Two Fingers will be back on the 31st day).

I'm on a couple of Thailand night-life forums that have implemented "reputation", where you can give a guy a dislike. (down thumb)
However, guys who weren't "in the clique" had other guys ganging up on them to knock down their reputation.
They had to then implement a X dislikes/day caveat, so that the teams of guys knocking down another guy's reputation couldn't get ahead of any likes he was receiving.

Sometimes it's very high-school-girlish in the way people pick sides & go after each other.
Once my friend Denny did a tour of Pattaya for some guys & hired a truck to drive them around. When he asked for them to pitch in for the cost of the vehicle, most of them went straight to the forum to bash him & give him dislikes.
Needless to say, Denny never sponsored any more tours to show new guys around again.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that's a whole other can of worms.

Not only did I raise your ratio w/ a like; I'm gonna reply!:roflmao:

Like other forums, on other topics, TB has a pile-on sect, which I find...humorous. I personally can see EXACTLY who & what is behind the keyboard, even WHY on some of the posts!
Awesome!
Some have even gone so far as posting "selfie-vids" to illustrate a point or post, and BOOM! There it is. One poster in particular, this guy was playing, making his point, and.... Never mind!:roflmao:

It's all good.
A "Dislike" button would lead to mayhem; I'm sure the diligent moderators have their hands full as it is.

And now-
I'm going to REPORT your posts! All of them!:roflmao:

It was said kinda "tongue in cheek, actually!

Guess I forgot the smilie.

Dislikes seem like a pretty bad idea.

This is a place where so many people are just trying to get better at something and build their confidence by sharing their knowledge on a topic that people aren't always super into elsewhere. The idea of a "like" button allows people to just throw some easy encouragement each others' ways, while the absence of a dislike button means people generally have to express displeasure/disagreement by actually explaining what part of something they dislike and why, which at least gives criticism a chance at being constructive.

A like without an explanation isn't as helpful as an honest expression of why something is good, but it still feels nice and it's easy to give out, whereas a dislike without explanation can tear a person down without even giving them a clue how as to what they did to deserve it, so it just kind of hurts without purpose and leaves people feeling bad without giving them a chance of correcting themselves.

That's more or less how we approach it in education. You give praise when someone gets it right, but you don't say "terrible work, you moron" when they get it wrong- you show them how to fix it.

Well, there MIGHT, I say might- be better ways,:roflmao: in education or elsewhere, to make a correction or comment w/out saying "terrible work, you moron".

Just sayin....

Believe it or not, we had certain members that would post things like "+1" primarily in OT, just to get their post count up. Now, we find certain members using that rule to purposefully inflate their "like ratio".

A lot of members were against likes when they were introduced, and this is why.

There were a select few that would run into any OT thread and post "FREEBIE" to accelerate their post count.

Re the "likes" thing..... it does give this place a bit more of a Fakebook feeling. I have given and received likes, but wouldn't be heartbroken if the system disappeared.

I will say that I do like the alerts deal, I don't always have the time to check every thread I may have posted in so it's nice to be reminded when someone may have responded to something I wrote.

In a perfect world, w/o humans (LOL), it would be great. Folks who give good advice get likes & folks who go around being snarky for the sake of it get dislikes.
Unfortunately, all it takes is ticking someone off & they're going to roll through all your posts disliking them.

It kind of sucks how negative energy motives people so much!~

Well, I mean, we can't just hit 'em anymore, so my hands are kinda tied here.

True, but in a perfect world, wouldn't people just... like, not go around being snarky for the sake of it in the first place?

Hey, hows about THIS...(maybe it can start off as a trial in OT, and see what happens from there..)
I see now the problem with a "Dislike" button.
So instead may I suggest

A "DESTROY" Button! (Or has this been done before too?)

download (6).jpg

What it would do (I saw a little toy like it for automobiles, for use while driving) It would make a noise, and then a visual effect could be generated, and the post or even the Thread itself! in question would detonate from the screen!
I leave it to the Mods to decide if it would vanish from just the Members screen or actually from TalkBass Forum itself!

Granted, it could have the danger of making this site a very sparse place, (Just like the use of Nuclear Weapons would in the real World- Are you listening Kim??)

But think of the savings in bytes and the like!

Let's be honest here- if we implement a button that produces explosions, I'm gonna wanna push it regardless of the posts's content.

For someone who admittedly dislikes people you seem to be pretty interested in how many of them like you.

I'd like to think the majority of those likes came from answering someone's question or helping them troubleshoot something.
Humans are illogical creatures by nature. Just because I'm a misanthrope doesn't mean I don't like being appreciated.

Maybe there should be separate buttons for like & "this person actually helped me", to separate the wheat from the chaff.
