hmm, does t seem ideal since there are times when I’ll want it off. Plus, I would be limiting the number of blocks I can use for modulation stuff if there’s a perpetual 4-block hold. Am I understanding this correctly?

What's "it", when you say you want it off?
If you want the ES-5 off completely (ie: no effects) just turn the effects loop block off on the HX.
Don't turn the loop off on the ES-5. Only turn it off on the HXFX. If you turn it off on the ES-5, it'll stop signal flow completely, as the HXFX will still be routing signal to Send 1 (and therefore never being returned)
All Loop 1 is doing in this circumstance is being reserved for the "master" signal flow between the ES-5 and HXFX.
And yep, technically you'll be down to 5 blocks in the HXFX. If you want to keep one spare, rather than being reduced to 4 blocks available, keep your outboard EQ.
