Line 6 HX Effects

Happy slightly belated NPD to me, I was finally able to pull the trigger on one of these and it showed up Monday. I got it mostly for guitar but I've been seeing what it can do with my bass rig. I'm impressed with how clean, capable, and flexible it is. I was writing a review and I realized it read like advertising copy, so I won't go overboard. Love some of the compressor models, parametric and tilt EQ are great, and I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality of the overdrives. "Vermin" and "Clawthorn" models are particularly good in a parallel setup with my amp. Also dig the "Elephant Man" delay model for bass, it seems to have the high-end sheen that I enjoy about the EHX delay.

I don't know if it's going to be a "pedalboard killer" for my bass setup. I made a mock-up of my current signal path in the box, and got pretty close to the sound I was looking for, but not close enough. That setup may take some more tweaking. Right now I'm reworking my tone from the ground up to see if I can emulate the "mojo" in the box without driving my amp so hard. 2018 tech crashes into early 70s wire and glass, final outcome of the collision yet to be determined.

Hi,
I am thinking about a pre/power amp config with my new Fearless F112.
What do you think about HxFx as a preamp? Did you try it? What blocks do you use?
Thank you!

The Darkglass and Sansamp models both sound good and you can definitely get a usable tone. I've messed around with both feeding my amps effects return, but lately I use the amp models from my stomp instead.

I use my hx fx as a control center for my whole board and I use it paired with a Verellen Meatsmoke tube preamp, Two Notes Torpedo Cab M+. This allows me a very versatile setup i can get pretty much any tone I want between the Meatsmoke and hx fx on board preamps and all of the cool effects and tone shaping available in the hx fx.

Goodness... I knew the Meatsmoke was big, but seeing it next to the HXFX... Dang. Knocks my G.A.S. for it down a couple notches. Have you ever looked inside? I've always wanted one because they seem to sound amazing from the audio I've heard online, but does it really need to be that big?

These 3.0 effects really have me reconsidering what is staying on with board. The Glitch Delay and Shuffling Looper cover a lot of similar ground to the Meris Ottobit Jr and I might be able to take that off board. I don't really use my Aftershock at all because the HXFX and Stomp dirt make it redundant. I don't think anything will replace my H9Max except for whatever Eventide releases next. The C4 sounds great but I'd like to try out a Future Impact at some point. I'd also like to get my hands on a Key9 and see how that plays with the Polypitch on bass.

A small part of me wants to flip a lot of my gear for a Helix Rack and power amp, and put a couple pedals in a drawer.

I played what is probably my last gig of the year on Friday, so I'll have plenty of time to mull over this.

Great board! The HX Effects and Two Notes Cab M+ are the guts of my big board. I couldn't be more impressed with the Two Notes, in particular. Pair any preamp you like with it (or just use the amazing sounding onboard preamp), and I'm enjoying the hell out of playing "clean".

I honestly find the quality of the HX dirt sounds to be better than those in the Aftershock, and MUCH easier to dial in. As a result, my idea to use the AS as an all-purpose kind of gain pedal on my board never happened and I just left it off.

That's kind of where I have ended up. I do like the AS for gated fuzz tones more than the HX, but since I got the C4 I don't have much need for that. It will probably be bumped to a smaller board or to the shelf.

I still need to check out the Glitch/Shuffle combo, I've wanted to check out an Ottobit Jr. for a long time. I really dig some of the stuff Janek does with it. I've felt the same about the dirt models in the Helix, and the Chainsaw kind of surprised me... I wasn't that excited about a Boss dirt model, but I find myself liking it a lot at lower gain settings. I still have a couple other dirt pedals on my board because I have the room, but the HX Teemah is still my go-to for dirt. I'll say this though... I do want to check out the new Ultrawave coming from Source Audio!

Regarding the C4 vs. Impact (briefly): Both are great. The FI sounds a little more "analog fat" than the C4 and has a few other options that I like (like being able to do FOUR of one type of oscillator), but the C4 is smaller and the editor is much more user friendly, IMO. Both are killer pedals, so it just depends on which you vibe with more. I love the Impact and won't get rid of it, but I just find the C4 a bit easier to use. Plus the Neuro Community. The Impact has a patch share community, but it's a bit more convoluted than the super easy C4 process.

Actually, I agree with you there. The one thing I can't coax out of the HX is a Mastotron/Woolly Mammoth sound.

@gregmon79 might have some input here. He's explored the dirt models in the HX pretty extensively and has a mind for dirt like I have for envelope filters. ;)

To take your thought one step further, I'm actually considering whether my Stomp will replace my HXFX on my main board. The 8 block update is pretty huge for me personally, so having that and the amps in the Stomp may win. I was also using the HXFX as a MIDI controller, but have switched MIDI control over to my iPad since I pretty much always have it at gigs anyway. The Stomp could free up some space on my board because of that, which would be pretty nice!

I just breezed into the thread after realizing I hadn’t been here since the update!! And I also just considered building a board around the stomp, HXFX and possibly a preamp and a dirt box. I’m very pleased with 3.0. I’ve always been very pleased with any updates. But man, this update is def something special. I’m so close to almost completely going digital. I even have a fractal FM3 and FC6 sitting on my bedroom floor....not saying ones better than the other...just sayin.....

Heres a pic of the inside the transformer is pretty massive. Personally the warmth and huge sound make up for the size i absolutely love how massive it sounds.

This may be a bit of blasphemy, but has anyone thought about (or actually gone through with) trading down from the HX Effects to the HX Stomp? I wouldn't mind freeing up some space on my board, and I also wouldn't mind having some amp/cab sims. I need to research it a bit more (for example, figuring out if the Stomp has all the effects from the HX Effects that I currently use, etc), but I'm curious about anyone else's opinions/experiences.

I did this. Then I sold the Stomp for an LT.

I'm just here for the meme's
