Line 6 HX Effects

I'm using an XLR cable direct to FOH (TRS from HX Effects). The signal is balanced but not transformer balanced, so not fully isolated. You can have a standalone DI in your gigbag in case you need it for the rare occasions (I have a Radial Stagebug 2).

The Zeroamp model in the HX Effects is really, really good. I like it better than Youtube video I heard. I based my main sound on it and I put an EQ after it for when I need more mids (but not really a problem IMO) because it's based on the BDDI v1 as mentioned and it's switchable (upper right switch). I also add an Ampeg Classic preamp on the effect loop for when I need that clean Ampeg sound (upper left switch).

Although that works, it's not as flexible/trustworthy as a proper transformer-coupled DI.

Use some of the money you save on not buying pedals, to pair the HX with a proper Jensen-equipped DI box like a Radial JDI...

Transformers in DI's... not always. Active DI's can be just a FET based buffer. Countryman Type 85 and I think also the Radial J48 would be examples. Transformers do have a sound and on the Helix, while I have not tested it, I would expect more headroom with an active DI and maybe a slightly warmer tome from a passive DI.

I'm working a tough (RF slammed) room tonight, If I get a chance I'll pull a JDI and see what that feels like. I'm genrelly within 20 feet of the mixer so normally I just go 1/4".

I have indeed, without any trouble. Been using these cables to go to PA/IEM setups for both rehearsals and gigs with three different bands since late 2020. (One cable to go to the board, and one to come back to my IEM.) Always smart to have a backup DI if necessary of course, but I haven't had any trouble setting the Line 6's output to line level and going straight to boards with just the cable.

i agree. I was just trying to confirm that it works. I always keep that adapter cable in my bag “just in case”. But I’ll more than likely never use it.

I'm powering everything from a Onespot 9v DC adapter (using RJ45 adapters on both end, search PoE).
I have a very little noise coming from the effect loop (I will try a power isolator to fix it), but I don't hear it when I'm playing. The Ampeg Classic is dead quiet by itself.

I am not shure that HX FX has balanced output as HX Stomp does. HXFX is meant to go directly to amp or pedal, not to PA.

Yeah I know documentation says TS but found a thread in Line 6 forum about TRS impedance balanced outputs, but not transformer isolated balanced output. Agree not the same as the Stomp balanced outputs and the reason I said to bring a proper DI box for when it's needed.

I've checked. You'r right. It's not true balanced as in Stomp but is impedance balanced which has audio going only through one wire (tip) while second wire has same impedance therefore eliminating noise at the balanced input. Not sure that most people are aware of this.

You don't need to have transformer balanced DI as most electronically balanced DIs will do the job, but transformer balanced DI proved their best in eliminating ground loops because of the galvanic isolation.

I don't use the TRS-XLR exclusively, had a Qstrip on my board until just recently and still playing with the idea of a tube DI. But dang it's a nice solution for when I'm feeling lazy and/or don't need my full board. The front pocket of my gig bag is big enough for Stomp, instrument cables, TRS-XLR, IEMs and even my mini fold-up Hercules stand. For once I can be almost as fast as those d@mn vocalists that just blow out of the gig before you even turn your back. LOL

One particular conversation with a sound engineer on the second day of a two-day gig, when he A) saw my Stomp and B) saw my TRS-XLR cable on the second day of the gig (paraphrased a bit):
SE: "Ugh... Line 6. And what's that? Let me get you a DI box."
Me: "Nah, it's good. Thanks though!"
SE: "A DI would work better."
Me: "Okay, if you really want, but this is the same setup I had yesterday and you said it sounded great."
SE: "...." <turns around, walks away, no DI brought>

I’m late to the party but I’m picking one of these up this week. Will be running it in the effects loop of my Bassbone OD. NSD NXT5 (passive) EUB and a passive Skyline 55-60. Want to get closer to Tony Levin’s EUB tone and will be setting up 3 or 4 banks for the 55-60 for my various gigs - 1 R&B, 1 Americana, and 2 for Worship Team - we do a lot of the modern rock stuff but also do a lot of modern urban gospel (I could just use the R&B patch for that I suppose)… Live, aside from church I run a ToneHammer 500 into two SL112s and I definitely don’t need amp modeling. That’s why I decided on this instead of one of the amp modeling units.

any good selections for those banks???

Ive played with a few bands where the stomp was used to create a signal chain for at least one of the guitarists. Unbelievable flexibility.

The bad part of the H9 is it only does 1 effect at a time, so (at least to me) its not even in the same category as the HXFX or HX Stomp.
