Line 6 HX Effects

Nice board,
next gig you migbt shock everyone by breaking out with Dubstep type grooves.

Haha thanks. Well, I’ve for the effect to do it, so who knows?!

I need to get my signal flow and routing down first though. I started messing with the send/return options in the effects loop. I had some weird results. I don’t think I was utilizing them properly. I also need to decide if I still need all this dirt. Now that the HX is on board, I almost feel bad for saying this, I may not need any of my dirt boxes except the A/O. I was running the OCD model through my preamps and damn did it sound awesome. The RT and MBD1 are great pedals and I never thought they’d really leave my board. Like, ever. But I’m finding the rats and drives in the HX to be just as good. Whish is still kinda blowing my mind.

If I chose to take the RT and MBD1 off, it would make things a lot easier routing wise. But really what I need to decide is how and what exactly I’m going to use the HX for. It’s all there. Every effect I could ever want or need, just about anyway, is there in that box. So this board may be a trial run. I could end up going to a slightly smaller board with even less stuff on it in a month or so.

But first, routing and signal flow. Gotta get those down pat. Then I’ll start deciding if I’m cutting any more or not. I may end up putting my DD500 back on eventually. Just not sure right now. It’s all in the air atm. But my back is killing me and my eyes are almost dried shut. More tomorrow. Maybe I’ll even try to record some rudimentary “demos”.

I just talked to GC online and a local store, both said that all the line 6 stuff was undiscountable, and they would get in trouble if they discounted it at all. Maybe something changed...?

I thought it was weird when SW told me that there was no tax because of the state I lived in. Not sure if that’s got anything at all to do with it. Probably not.

It's possible Line 6 has an agreement in place that blocks discounts other than specifically approved ones? I don't know. I know my purchase was made with the recent holiday coupon.

I'm nobody special, and I haven't paid full retail price on a new item since I started doing this. Maybe I've just gotten lucky on what I've been looking for and the timing. I've been giving this advice for a while now, if it doesn't work as well as I thought I'm going to feel like an ass. :(

I first looked online and out in my 15% coupon code and it applied the discount. When I went to the store to pick it up there was some mix up. My local store only had one and they wanted to give me one from another state and have it shipped. We cancelled my first order and I bought the one in the store and they applied my discount to that one. They didn’t even bat an eye to give me
The discount.

Can anybody compare the HX sound quality to eventide?

I love the h9 for pitch, reverb & delay, but find it lacking for modulation. And of course only one effect at a time, so I never "tie up" the h9 with eq, dirt or compression

I like the modulation a lot. The tones are good and are really flexible especially in the hx. I had an M9 first and the reverb/delay modulation stuff really was what interested me in the first place. Im just getting around to messing with the dirt settings and compressor but as of now I'm keeping my bass soul food and way huge swollen pickle because I like them a lot.

Hey, where did you guys purchase your HX? Just wondering if there are any places that are better to buy from (quick delivery, special deals, discount codes, included stuff). I know it's $599 everywhere, but just wondering.

I got mine through Musician's Friend, because 1) I happen to have a MF card and 2) like someone else mentioned, they have the Backstage points. I got almost $50 back in store credit, which is nice. The points add up... I bought lights for my band, and then used the Backstage Points to get an upgraded stand for my NXTa upright. Stand was $225 and I got it for $23 + free shipping.

Check it again, bro. It's not -1 Octave. It says just OCTAVE. That knob controls both octaves, -1 & -2. Trust me. Use your ear.. and you'll hear two lower tones. Not just one.

@bgmww Correct, it says Octave. Singular. Meaning -1. Not -1 & -2.

I eventually wanted to do this anyway, so I compared the Bass Octaver model in the HX to every octaver I currently own. The HX Bass Octaver actually compared surprisingly favorably, and it does NOT have an automatic combined -1 & -2. Trust me. I'm an octaver snob almost as much as I am a filter junkie, but I still wanted to give your theory a fair shake. I even made sure to check through my in-ear setup, just to make sure I was hearing all octavers directly and clearly. The only ones that had -1 and -2 were the OC2s (Taiwanese and Japanese) and OC3, which have those controls.

While the Bass Octaver definitely doesn't have whatever voodoo magic the OC2 has, it's still pleasantly synthy when using -1 without the dry signal. It's smoother and more well mannered, much like I remember the Octabass to be. (I don't currently own the EBS, but I had one for several years). Of the octavers I own, the HX Bass Octaver actually sounds the most similar to the Octamizer and MXR... settings in the photo. I even compared it to the Meatbox and PS5 just for kicks, even though I'm 100% aware that those weren't fair comparisons.

Conclusion: I'm actually quite happy with the Bass Octaver, and won't have any problem using it in a live mix. Do I prefer my Octabvre (or OC2)? For sure. But the Bass Octaver model is quite well done, and perfectly usable.

Could you please record two sound samples?
Set it like this.
Sample 1 - Bass Octaver - Dry: 0. Wet 100% - Whatever the tone you want. . Play just a note. Lets's say D, 12th fret 2nd string.
Sampler 2 - Boss OC2 . Dry 0 - OCT'1 100% , OCT2: 0. Same note
And if you want. Make a 3rd simple. Boss OC2. Dry 0 - OCT1 100%, OCT2.. 100% or something like that...

I don't have the best quality recording setup, but sure, I can record some clips. Probably not til tomorrow evening though.

You could post a clip of what you're talking about with the HX octaver as well, and we can compare. Maybe there's something else going on...? I had a dead string in a new set once, and it made the E string sound like I was feeding just that string through a chorus pedal.

Back from Vegas.. Didn't win it big lol like thats a surprise.. Don't matter cause I'm still heading to my local b&m and getting one I'm hoping today but if not Monday. Feeling a little hung over still haha.. Really nice to see nothing but positive praise still going in this thread and CANNOT wait till mines on hand!!! Will keep y'all posted later

OK, I'm in. Musician's Friend won't have them in until March, so since I'm too immature to wait, I ordered it from Sam Ash. Calling in I was able to get a 10% discount, plus I had a $20 off coupon, so not bad. Thanks to all ( @ChubbyJerk !) for helping me navigate the brave new world of discounting.

Every few years I try and get back in the world of effects and then after a while I realize the fidelity/price/convenience equation is not there (yet?) for me. Seems like maybe things will be different this time...? Or am I being a Charlie Brown-ish sucker again? Hopes are high.

I don’t know about any arrangements Line 6 have specifically, but plenty of manufacturers try and prevent their dealers advertising discounts. This is why when Prymaxe for example has a discount code, it might not work with many of the items you might actually want to buy. However that only applies to the discount codes they give out publicly, ask them for a deal on one of those usually restricted brands and they will sort you out with a one off code that does work!
