Line 6 HX Effects

I've now been messing with this unit, installed the HX Edit and it seems to work so far. However, I'm not sure whether I was falsely expecting a more visual thing going on (more like the Helix Native). This is what it looks like when I open it:

I bought some IR's from [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] (Dave) and I'm amazed how different my 112 full range speaker sounds (playing through 112 PA cab wet, and the 212 bass cab dry).

There are some bugs in my version too. When I use the hands-free "mode", the parameters behave sketchy. Sometimes they jump to zero, which is quite annoying. Not terrible, but annoying.
With what I hear from the 2.54, I'll leave the 2.5 for a while.

I don't belive HX Edit fully supports the HX effects pedal yet. I believe I read that is what they currently are working on.

Yeah, the HX Edit is not full force yet. L6 is saying "spring". But that could mean summer to from the sound of it. Looking forward to it that's for sure!

Yep, something is definatley funky here. Had issues with the exp pedal, and also found routing problems. I don't know if this happened in the older FW as well, but I noticed that the Y split mode does not mix where the mixer is. I had a parallel path set up split right at the beginning and being mixed after the 8th block. The 8th block was a reverb and it affected the other path even though it was before the mixer block.

Bad news friends, another update with the Dunlop Vol X just FYI:
At this point, I'm pretty convinced that the trouble I'm noticing with the Vol X is from something in the last update. I've noticed that it now does something different every time I power up my HX, which is a problem I definitely didn't have before updating to 2.54.

Two gigs yesterday, and without changing any settings whatsoever:
- A.M Gig #1: power up and the volume block was at 10%. Had to delete the block to get things back to normal. Forgot to hit save. *facepalm
- P.M. Gig #2: Volume block (that I previously deleted and forgot to save the patch ... April Fool's! Joke's on me. lol) was at 0% on powering up the board. Deleted again and hit save this time. lol As I was doing some editing by foot during soundcheck, parameters that I would be editing would randomly return to zero. Unplugged the Vol X completely, and problem solved.

Kind of a bummer, but not the end of the world of course. I've got another gig this weekend that I don't want to jinx, so I'm going to wait til after that to try reverting back to 2.50.

What do we want? Support ticket!
When do we want it? NOW!

That sucks to hear though dude. Both you and Moak need to let Line 6 know ASAP. I was considering buying one of the L6 Mission pedals soon too so if I get this while 2.54 is still on mine, I'll post findings.

Still messing around with the synth stuff. Today I messed around with trying to get an OC2 sound and think I'm getting there considering I've never owned one and can only go off demo vids so with that being said I think if I dial in the compression better it might help with th glitch you get sometimes. Gonna keep working on it but I think it's a fair start. The second sound file is fine tuning a synth sound I was previously working on. Trying to get Bruno Mars 24k Magic type tone down and still a ways away for sure but just thought I'd post it anyways as I think it sounds better than the last synth sound I posted. Cheers!

Man I still can’t listen to these files on my phone. It sucks. Never had that issue before

So I happened upon the actual “ring modulator” tonight. I totally and completely missed that thing before!!! I’ve been using the AM Ring this whole time for my ring sound and while it’s cool, I wasn’t in love with it. The ring modulator though, hell yes!! That model sounds very awesome. Really happy I found it. Still can’t believe I missed that thing this whole time!

I'm guessing you have an iPhone ? It works on my android but not my iPhone which I thought was weird. Maybe cause I recorded it with iPhone and sent to android and converted to mp3 and uploaded from android. Ive no clue how to do soundcliud but I never really tried either which I should..Damn I've yet to mess around with the ring mods I'll be sure to check that one out!

My first effort at screen protectors...

My cut on the bottom one could've been a little cleaner, but I'm happy for now. I have a show this weekend, and the guitarist for the band I'm sitting in with has zero stage awareness. Super nice guy and lots of energy, but he's tripped on my pedalboard when it was almost off stage on a 30' x 20' space, and I've lost count on how many times he's bumoed me on small stages. :meh: He put a ding in the headstock of my newest bass not even a month after I got it.

No problems ever in my 14-piece main band, but I have to duck and cover for flying headstocks in a 5-piece outfit. And his response when I talk to him about it: "Man, I'll try, but you'll just have to dodge me." :eyebrow:

So.... screen protectors.

Nice man looks good and protected, it's all you can do really to help from clumsy dudes... That or put it in a bubble haha... All you need now is some nifty colored Jack nuts for that final touch like @gregmon79

Yeah man, lookin good for sure! I prefer the narrower look of mine and the thickness but overall I dig your look as well. I need to try applying mine with thinner adhesive. See how that makes it look.

I really liked how my pimp pieces turned out. I’m happy anyway.

I also had practice last night. Thank God! Haha. It went well though. The HX continues to impress. The B:ASSMASTER model I built is totally brutal in the most beautiful way. It sound amazing at loud volumes. I did find I needed to dial in my Dimension C better though. It lost some bottom last night. But that was an easy fix by just adding some switches to the equation.

Well, my Bongo sold, and arrived safely with the new owner. My Paypal account was burning a hole in my virtual pocket. So I have taken the leap. I don't expect that this will be able to supplant all my pedals, and give me the ultimate gigging setup, but I do look forward to all it has to offer, even if it never gets out much.
FYI, Sweetwater email inquiry returned a response of no discounts, but, a phone call got me a small reduction in price. A little bit is better than nothing. Thank you to all you enablers and gear hounds.

Congrats man nice to hear you got a bit of a discount which is better than a pointy stick in the eye haha

Hey!
Some of us have the HxFx for a time yet
Which one(s) is your favourite effect? Setting?
How do you set your rig? In front of amp input, 4cm, loop fx?

Me, I am not gigging very much with it in electric. Most of my gigs with electric bass are with a blues band and they use to look at me like "what is that!!?!?!" when I bring my Korg Pitchblack... :D
But it is a very good tool for doublebass: noise gate, compress, HPF, graphic eq...

Is a good tool for teaching with only one amp.

I like most the 70's chorus, it has some grit that gives definition to your bass. And I use it in the Fx loop of my Genz Benz Shuttle 6.2 12T combo.

My english is not the best, I wish you can understand

To be honest I'm still in the process of figuring out how to connect the HX. Up till now I had a Two-Notes Le Bass in FX loop1 and a TC Sub'N'Up in FX2 with only the octave up. I usually run the TC on a parallel path with Wah and Vermin distortion. Cab sim or low pass filter usually went on the end of the chain and I switched it on/off via snapshots.

Yesterday I tore down the Le Bass setup and I am experimenting with only using the clean channel and using Obsidian7000 for drive. I'll probably use it with a 4CM so I can still use it as a DI box. Obsidian sounds really nice, but the Le Bass does the tube warmth thing much better (as it is a real tube preamp).

The noise gate gave me a bunch of problems as there is quite a lot of noise with all the distortions and heavy gating introduced a bunch of artifacts. It also started acting like a really poopy compressor to the point where I thought my TC SpectraComp was broken. I'll try experimenting with hard gate instead.

Also I found a nice trick since I'm using a preamp in the FX loop: I tied an expression pedal to the send level of that loop, so I have a volume pedal for the main bass signal without sacrificing an effect block.

Oh and all this goes into the input of a Peavey MiniMax (driving EBS CL 112 and 210) with bright switch engaged, so it sounds quite transparent and I still have the option to EQ my rig to the venue quickly.

I am having a hard time with the snapshots... I can't seem to wrap my head around creating/saving them..

You are not the only one! haha ;) I too have had the same issue. But then I haven't really sat down with this feature and tried to really dig into it. I believe its setting a bank to a "snapshot" then recalling that bank for said song or part or passage to be the exact sound and effect(s) you want to use in that part or song or passage. If I'm not mistaken its like if you want a dist, flanger, delay and comp for one part of a song, you hit a switch and its all there. So you can set like 4 snapshots for 4 songs and all you need to do is hit one switch for a whole song. Or part. Or passage. I think this is what it's for.

Fav effect? Can I say all?? haha I like a lot of what the HX offers. There are a small handful I'd either never use or not too crazy about. But overall, I'm very happy with the majority of what's offered.

I just use the HX as an effect, it's in my chain as a set of effects. I run it on my board into an amp and cab. I do use one of the effects loops as well. I keep my OC2, Zoom (used for synth) and meatbox in there.

I plan on using the HX for more than I do now in the future once I really learn it well. I have it down pretty good now but as far as using the snaphots and stuff, I need more time with my band to map that stuff out. When I get that down I'll hopefully utilize that stuff more.

So you can set like 4 snapshots for 4 songs and all you need to do is hit one switch for a whole song. Or part. Or passage. I think this is what it's for.

To clarify further:

- You load a patch. In this patch, you have a dist, flanger, delay and comp blocks set up
- Each of your effects is configured in various states of on, off, drive, compression, delay etc.
- Switch to Snapshot mode. Now, with the push of a switch you can change, say, the amount of distortion in your dist pedal, turn your flanger off, your delay on and adjust compression.

From a usability perspective - Snapshot mode is useful for a verse tone, adding distortion or boost for a chorus, then maybe turning on some other effects (flanger etc.) for special parts. Using snapshots vs presets means you don't cop the "gap" you hear when you change patches while playing.
