Line 6 HX Effects

So much to catch up on in this thread!

Got my board built out last night and will post photos a.s.a.p. Zuma looks pretty badass under there.

I also have an update on the Vol X: Had some weirdness at rehearsal when I assigned it to a Volume block on the HX... As I rolled from toe down to heel down, volume went from 100% toe down > 0% mid sweep > 100% volume at heel down. But when I assigned the pedal, I did a full sweep... Toe down to heel down and back to toe down. My theory is that the HX may record the sweeps, because I didn't have that trouble previously, and when I assigned it to a new Volume block last night, I did a sweep of only toe down to heel down, and it worked perfectly.

I'll do some more testing tonight and report back.

Dang, you kept a lot! I'm culling the hell out of mine.
Do you have your external effects running in your effects loops?

Yeah I seemed to have kept sticking things back on haha it seems now I’m just gonna use the HX for delay and mod for the most part. For the time being anyway. It’ll probably change in a few weeks haha I guess I just like the possibilities available. I’m always a sucker when it comes to options even if I don’t use them that much.

Zoom plus HX on the board?

Yep. The only thing I’m using the zoom for is one synth sound. And that’s it. It’ll probably stay until L6 releases a more favorable (to me) bass synth in the HX. Which I really believe they will eventually. Hopefully. If they really listen to people in those suggestion forums they have, there should be some cool stuff coming with future updates.

I really don’t NEED the zoom, OC2, TC comp or the meatbox. That whole corner and sideways center row is kind of expendable. And once the AOU gets here it won’t look as jammed in as that top row does. There are just sounds the HX can’t do atm that I want to be able to have. Like the meatbox. When I use it I like to add trem (in the HX) with some chorus or flanger (also with the HX) along with a whammy octave. So I’m def using the HX for a lot still. But I’m still holding my breath patiently for L6 to release some more stuff with updates.

As part of a future update I think Line 6 should add the input gate to the HX. I find on my LT the input gate works better than adding a noise gate later in the signal chain.

Edit: of course on higher gain settings the noise gate may be needed later in the chain but in conjunction with the input gate you get a lower threshold on the later gate.

I’m at the other end of the spectrum. The only pedal I use is the HX. Currently it’s just for the always-on tone shaping: comp/obsidian/paraEq.

At my cover band rehearsal last night I got multiple comments about great the bass sounded (unusual!). The singer actually asked me if had a new bass. And this is through the crappy rehearsal space amp/cab. :bassist:

Nice! I sold off practically my whole board to get an HX then sold the rest and a small combo amp and got the LT. Nice to hear your HX is solely working well in a band mix!!

I have a mate trying to sell me a Meatbox - what's it like? Never heard one/seen one, there seems to be multiple versions and some are good, some are bad?

I'm planning on getting a COG Effects T-16 or T-47 to cop that more analog/synth octave feel. And I'm struggling to convince myself to sell my Cali. But between those two and a couple of drive pedals, I'm set.

There’s really only one version of an actual meatbox. It just depends on if you get an old DOD one of the rerelease in the newer box. But it’s the same pedal. And there’s nothing out there that I know of that does what it does. It’s not your usual octave. It can pretty much suck the air out of the room in a venue if ran the right way through the FOH. It’s friggen awesome. It’s more felt than heard. Quite unique as far as things a pedal can do.

All this plus it’s a good investment since it’s no longer made and prices are getting crazy.

Volume X issues
As I mentioned, I had some wonkiness with the Dunlop Mini Volume X as an Expression controller at rehearsal on Wednesday. After more testing, my theory of the HX recording the sweep is wrong. Last night, I cleared the volume block in the signal chain, re-added it, and reassigned the Dunlop as the Exp. Worked perfectly as it was supposed to. Tonight I fired up the board and without making any changes, the Vol X went weird again. This time instead of doing volume 100 > 0 > 100 in one sweep from toe down to heel down, it was 0 > 100 > 0. Yay.

I tried the same cycle a couple times to be sure. Cleared out the block, re-added and reassigned. Worked perfectly again. Restart and... !@#$%^! :spit:

My new theory is that it's something in the 2.54 update. With HX 2.50, it worked great, no problems (and same with the Source Audio Dual Expression). I updated to 2.54 on Tuesday evening, and now the Volume X misbehaves. @Digital Igloo - any thoughts? It's not the end of the world of course, but definitely a little frustrating.

Another thing I noticed on 2.54 is that I moved around a couple presets, and for my main patch in particular, the HX didn't import the snapshots.

I'm hesitant to try going back to 2.50 and the previous Line 6 updater (if that's even possible?), because I have a couple gigs this weekend.

HX board build shots
That said, here's some fresh HX Board pron for you guys.

I still have a few bugs to work out, but it's a tight little board. I have a couple pedals that will rotate in/out of the Funk Face spot, mostly filter based stuff that the HX can't do... Funk Face, Bassballs, Pigtronix Bass Envelope Phaser.

It's not the cleanest cabling job I've ever done, but it's not bad. The Zuma is pretty badass, and that blue! Right now I have a 3 outlet strip underneath for the HX power block until my current doubler gets here, but I'm already digging that too... the USB ports are super handy for powering my G10 wireless & bluetooth page turner, and good for charging phones/ipads of course.

I also uploaded a little clip of the Octabvre (FX loop 1) and Funk Face (FX loop2) combo. First half is the Funk Face without dirt, second half I added the drive side.

Make sure you raise a support ticket with Line 6 dude - it's all well and good to PM Digital Igloo here about it, but to make sure it's fixed for everyone it's best to let them know "officially"

Also, sweet looking board!

Updated to 2.54 yesterday. Made a new patch for some synth stuff, and guess what happened today. One of the expression pedals started acting up and went 0>100>0 instead of 0>100. Changing to another patch and back again fixed the problem. The strange thing is I use two identical Bespeco pedals and only one of them changed it's behavior.

Perhaps it's related to a specific synth/effect, as opposed to a problem with all effects? Wonder if it's the same effect as what Gecko was using
